Baylor's Brittney Griner leads AP All-America team

Brittney Griner has been in a class by herself all season. Now she's part of a select group.

Baylor's 6-foot-8 star senior was a unanimous selection to The Associated Press' All-America team Tuesday.

Griner became the fifth three-time AP All-American, joining Tennessee's Chamique Holdsclaw, Duke's Alana Beard, Oklahoma's Courtney Paris and Connecticut's Maya Moore. Paris and Moore were the only two to earn the honor all four years.

"That's pretty special company," Griner said.

She was joined on the squad by Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins, Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike, Delaware's Elena Delle Donne and Baylor teammate Odyssey Sims.

With Sims and Griner, it marked the sixth time that teammates were first team All-Americans. Connecticut has done it four times and Tennessee once.

"I think they're two of the best, period," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said.

It's hard to argue. Griner was unstoppable nearly all season, averaging 23.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.2 blocks. She also had 11 dunks, including three in one game against Florida State in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Griner and Diggins received 200 points and were unanimous choices by the 40-member national media panel that votes in the weekly Top 25. It's the sixth straight season that there has been at least one unanimous choice. Voting was done before the NCAA tournament.

Diggins has had an unbelievable season herself, guiding Notre Dame to its first Big East tournament title and a second straight conference regular-season championship. She's averaged 17 points, 5.9 assists and 3.1 steals and became the school's all-time scoring leader.

"This means a lot to me," said Diggins, who also was an All-America last season. "I was fortunate enough to have a school like Notre Dame in my backyard, and this is an honor that I share with all my coaches and teammates."

Diggins joins Ruth Riley as the only Irish players to earn first-team All-America honors in consecutive seasons. Riley did it in 2000 and 2001.

The senior guard said she would love to have the All-America team on the floor.

"This would be a coach's dream team. I'd have a field day with this team," Diggins said. "We wouldn't lose."

Ogwumike guided Stanford to its seventh straight conference tournament championship before the Cardinal lost in the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament to Georgia. That ended a streak of five straight trips to the Final Four for the team.

She did all she could for the Cardinal, averaging 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Ogwumike was thrilled to learn she and her sister Nnemkadi, who graduated last year, were the first pair of sisters ever to be All-Americans.

"Wow, what a really cool accomplishment for our family," she said. "She always pulled me up when we were playing together, and to join her now is incredible."

While it was Chiney Ogwumike's first time as an All-American, Delle Donne earned the honor for a second straight time.

She carried Delaware to unprecedented heights this year with a trip to the NCAA tournament regional semifinals for the first time. The 6-foot-5 senior was second in the nation in scoring and helped the Blue Hens go undefeated in the Colonial Athletic Association for the second season in a row.

"It's an incredible honor to be an All-American," Delle Donne said. "To be with that group of girls is really special."

She ended her career as the fifth all-time leading scorer in NCAA history with 3,039 points, passing former stars Cheryl Miller, Holdsclaw and Moore in her last game Saturday.

Sims averaged 12.5 points and 5.7 assists for the Lady Bears, who lost in the regional semifinals to Louisville on Sunday night. She almost rallied them from a 19-point second-half deficit, scoring 29 points in the loss.

"I'm glad to be named to that; it's a great accomplishment," Sims said of making the All-America team.

The five All-Americans were on the preseason team, along with Maryland junior Alyssa Thomas. It was only the third time that the postseason All-Americans were all on the preseason team since the AP started compiling a squad in 1995.

Thomas headlined the second team with Connecticut sophomore Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Penn State junior Maggie Lucas, Duke junior Chelsea Gray and Kentucky senior A'dia Mathies.

The third team was Texas A&M's Kelsey Bone, UConn's Stefanie Dolson, Duke's Elizabeth Williams, Tennessee's Meighan Simmons and Notre Dame's Kayla McBride.

Wall Street slips after disappointing manufacturing data

By Ryan Vlastelica

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell modestly on Monday after weaker-than-expected U.S. manufacturing data and the Dow and S&P 500 slipped from record closing highs reached on Thursday.

The Institute for Supply Management's March reading on manufacturing came in at 51.3, down from analysts' average forecast of 54.2. A figure above 50 indicates expansion by the sector.

In a separate report construction spending rose more than expected in February, gaining 1.2 percent, compared with forecasts of a 1 percent rise.

The S&P remains about 0.4 percent away from its all-time intraday high of 1,576.09, but few catalysts are seen before the release of the closely watched payroll report on Friday.

Many investors said the market could have more risks to the downside, with continued uncertainty over the economic situation in Cyprus, though European markets were closed on Monday for a holiday.

"I'm not expecting much to happen in markets before the payroll report, but with things that quiet, we could be more vulnerable to any surprise external news," said Dan Veru, chief investment officer at Palisade Capital Management LLC in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

Data on the U.S. services sector is on tap for Wednesday, followed by the Labor Department's March payrolls report on Friday.

Economic data has been mixed, but strong readings may not be a positive catalyst for markets. Investors speculate if the Federal Reserve views the economy as strong enough, it could reduce its bond-buying program, which has helped boost equities.

"We want to see progress made in the economy, even if it is just small and incremental," said Veru, who helps oversee $3.6 billion. "I'd like to see more merger deals announced, which would give me confidence that there are still gains to be had."

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 10.20 points, or 0.07 percent, at 14,588.74. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 2.49 points, or 0.16 percent, at 1,566.70. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 9.56 points, or 0.29 percent, at 3,257.96.

Equities rose 10 percent in the first quarter, extending a string of monthly gains to five. With the advance, the S&P is now only 0.4 percent away from its all-time intraday high level of 1,576.09.

The S&P's surge in the quarter has very bullish implications. An analysis by Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, showed the index has risen in the three first months of the year nine times in the past 30 years, and in each case, it has posted gains for the year.

The average yearly gain after such a start, the data showed, was 17.56 percent. An advance like that would leave the S&P 500 at about 1,676 at the end of this year.

Despite the positive momentum, some analysts have called for a near-term pullback, and the uncertainty over Cyprus has contributed to stocks' trading in a tight range. The S&P 500 traded within 10 points of its previous all-time closing high for 13 sessions before breaking through.

In company news, Tesla Motors Inc jumped 13 percent to $42.83 after forecasting full profitability in the first quarter, citing strong sales of its Model S sedan.

Exxon Mobil Corp continued cleanup of a pipeline spill that spewed thousands of barrels of heavy Canadian crude in Arkansas. Shares of the Dow component rose 0.5 percent to $90.59.

Dell Inc warned that it would be dangerous to take on a lot of debt and remain a public company given its worsening profit outlook, in a sign that it views proposals from Blackstone Group LP and billionaire investor Carl Icahn as fraught with risk. The comments came on Friday, which was a holiday for U.S. markets.

Shares of Dell dipped 0.2 percent to $14.30.

4 hurt in crash, attack at California Walmart

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Four people were hurt Sunday when a driver crashed his car into a Wal-Mart and then assaulted customers inside, officials said.

The man hit two cars in the parking lot at about 11:15 a.m. with his red Oldsmobile Cutlass sedan then crashed through the storefront near the pharmacy and collided with a beer display before stopping, police and witnesses said.

The unidentified driver then got out of his car and used a blunt object to attack people, San Jose police Officer Albert Morales said. The driver was arrested when officers arrived.

Investigators have not determined how fast the driver ? described as a man in his 30s ? was going at the time of the crash but the car went about 20 feet into the Wal-Mart Supercenter that had about 70 people inside in San Jose, Morales said.

One person suffered what Morales described as serious injuries. He did not know the extent of the injuries to the three other people but said they were not life-threatening. The injured included a store employee.

Customer Sharon Kaye told the San Jose Mercury News the driver sideswiped her car as he made several runs around the parking lot before driving between poles at the entrance and crashing into the store.

"At first, I thought I may have done something to anger him while driving," she said. "But then I realized he was out to get into the store."

After the crash, the entrance to the Wal-Mart was roped off with yellow police tape, and workers put up large boards covering the automatic doors where the car had entered.

A Wal-Mart spokeswoman told the Mercury News that the store remained shut down for several hours, and an employee was among those hurt.

"We're obviously very concerned about the associate who was injured," spokeswoman Kory Lundberg said.

Shopper and witness Tianna Doan told the newspaper the employee was a cashier who was hit with the object and had a head injury.

Calls to the store by The Associated Press went unanswered Sunday.

Order your HTC One online with T-Mobile and get a free HTC car kit

HTC One

T-Mobile adds an official HTC One car kit to the $100 trade in for online HTC One orders

While you can't officially pre-order the HTC One on T-Mobile just yet, T-Mobile has updated their sign-up page and is now offering a free HTC car kit to folks who order online. This is in addition to the $100 Visa card you get from the trade in offer from HTC.

What we don't know yet is when to expect the HTC One at T-Mobile. Registering for more information is fine and dandy, and shifting the Visa card program around to make sure everyone can qualify is a good thing, but people want to know when they can get their hands on the HTC One on T-Mobile's new LTE network. The new $99 down payment plan won't attract anyone if you don't have what they want on the shelf.

In any case, if you're even slightly interested be sure to sign up for more information to cement your spot in the trade-in program, and consider ordering online for the free car kit. Hit the link below!

U.S. F-22 fighter jets set to join South Korea military exercise

In a move aimed to further deter threats from North Korea against its neighbor to the south, the United States sent F-22 stealth fighter jets to South Korea on Sunday to join military exercises.

The deployment comes as tensions are near an all-time high between Pyongyang and Washington. ?Kim Jong Un has?ratcheted?up the rhetoric?against?both South Korea and the United State in recent months, and in February violated U.N. sanctions by ordering a nuclear weapons test.?On Saturday, North Korea had entered a "state of war"?against South Korea, according to a statement reported by the north's official news agency, KCNA.?

"[North Korea] will achieve nothing by threats or provocations, which will only further isolate North Korea and undermine international efforts to ensure peace and stability in Northeast Asia," according to a?statement from the?U.S. military command in South Korea?announcing the fighter jets deployment.

The exercise, called "Foal Eagle," is meant to reinforce "the U.S. commitment of its most advanced capabilities to the security of the Republic of Korea," according to the statement.

The stealth?aircrafts?were deployed to the Osan Air Base in South Korea from Japan to engage in bilateral military drills.

Kim Jon Un has also recently threatened to "settle accounts" with the U.S. and posed near a chart that looked to detail bombings of American cities.

The F-22 jets arrival follows other recent displays of air power by the U.S. in South Korea. Last week B-52 bombers and B-2 stealth bombers were sent to the country for the annual?exercise.?

In another sign of how tense things have become, Pope Francis on Easter Sunday called for??renewed spirit of reconciliation? on the Korean Peninsula.
