Kristen Stewart On Her Commitment For 'On The Road' And ...

The Huffington Post has very recently published this interview with Kristen Stewart where she speaks about her commitment for ?On The Road? and reconnecting with her ?Twilight? fans. She also confirmed the rumour that she?ll be working in a new movie with Ben Affleck that starts filming in April.

Michael Hogan: I remember reading On the Road as a teenager, and the women didn?t register for me so much as characters. So I wonder, as a teenage girl reading it, how the women seemed to you when you first read the book?

Kristen Stewart: Yeah, it?s funny, they didn?t really register with me, either. People do love to say that this is a boy book and that the female characters tend
to be treated as play things and are peripheral. When you read the book, they tend to seem as though they?re almost like a tool for Kerouac to show that life?s crazy, that things are wild and sexy. That?s why, playing the part, we were privy to information that made this thing so different. I think getting to know the women behind the characters and getting to know Jack?s relationships with them and Neal?s relationships with them, it made it easier to play the character.

Did you meet LuAnne Henderson, whom your character, Marylou, is based on?

She had passed away, like, right before we started. But I met her daughter and there were hours and hours of tapes where she recalled her life in great detail, and very much within that time frame as well. When I first read the book ? I have brothers, and so I always felt like there wasn?t a huge distinction. I kinda wanted to be one of the boys for a while, and in some cases still do, and I think there are a lot of girls who read ?On the Road? who feel [that way]. I wasn?t aware then that the females weren?t at the forefront of the story. I was just so into the main characters, I was so enamored by them, I wanted to meet people in my life that were going to shock me and pull something out of me that I didn?t expect ?

Marylou?s a little bit that way too, isn?t she?

Oh, definitely. She was such a formidable partner for Neal [Cassady, the real-life inspiration for the book's Dean Moriarty]. Men, especially, love to identify with me and go, ?Well, you know, it?s kind of a misogynistic viewpoint. The book has a fairly chauvinist feel to it. How do you feel about that??

Kind of like my first question.

No, no, no. Not at all. That was actually really different. Because their thing is, ?Oh, how could they have allowed all those terrible things to happen to them?? It?s like, What makes you think that they were not absolute equal partners in that? What makes you think that they were taken from more than they gave, or more than they got back from the men that were apparently taking from them. I feel like getting to know LuAnne and who she was, and why she did the things that she did, and how she felt about them afterward, there was no thievery going on. She loved his life so much that she didn?t want to deprive him of any of that life, and he felt the same about her, and she very, very much carved her own path.

Obviously, you?re really asked to go places in this role. After I saw ?On the Road? in Toronto, I wrote an analysis of it, and one of the things I focused on is that you?re committing to the role to an admirable degree, with nudity, with sleeping with two men at the same time, with all this other stuff, and some people attacked me, saying, ?Just because she takes off her clothes, you think that?s real art?? But what I meant is that it?s an actor?s job to do the role she?s given without holding back. Can you help me defend myself a bit here?

[Laughs.] Actresses love to stand up and say, after they?ve shown their tits in a movie, that it was done tastefully and that it was, you know, far from gratuitous. I mean, projects that really require it are really few and far between. And I think that in this case, it needed to be. This book celebrates being alive and it celebrates being human, and if you want to cover up and deny any aspect of that, you are denying the spirit of the book. I think that it would have been so wrong to shy away from anything in this movie. I think that I would have gotten flak for that. I think that it would have been that I was scared to disappoint my ?Twilight? fans or something.

And I do hate also when people go, ?Oh, wow, great performance. So brave.? Oh, because I?m naked? That?s very annoying. But at the same time, if that?s what they?re focusing on, then ?On the Road? probably isn?t for them anyway. Also, I understand when people are already successful, you try to control some perception or you try to choose parts based on some expectation of what people are going to think. You?re clearly doing things because you want to be in some position of power and fame, which is not why I do what I do. And people, anyone that consumes that is then obviously going to think that you must have some consideration for those types of things, like what people are going to think.

But how hard is it ignore those considerations when you really are one of the biggest celebrities in the world? I mean, there?s no way around that.

It?s really not that hard. I can?t pragmatically approach anything in terms of my career. I need to be so rocked by something, so moved by something that the idea of letting it down or ruining it is painful, and that?s what gets you through the shoot. You read material and it provokes you on some level, and the reason you make the movie is to find out why it made you feel all those things. Those things are so rare to find that if you start also considering what people are going to think, you?ll never make a movie.

At the Toronto Film Festival, you took a full hour to come out and be with all your fans, and that was at a difficult time. How important was it for you to come out for the film and reconnect with your fans that day?

You should never step outside of your life and look at it like it?s this malleable thing you can shape so that people view it a certain way. I would never not have gone to something like that. I?ve been working on this for five years. I love this movie. I?m so proud of everyone involved ? I feel so strong standing next to them. I was asked a few times whether I was going to do it or, ?Oh, was it difficult for you? What made you stand up and do this?? It was like, why wouldn?t I? It made so much sense to me. I mean, the only time I feel comfortable being on TV or doing any sort of public appearance or anything, it has to have context. I don?t like just being a famous person, but with ?On the Road? it?s so clear why I?m there. With the fans and stuff, it?s just human energy that you simply cannot deny. People are standing there and sort of screaming for you and I?m not about to turn my back and walk away and go get warm inside, you know what I mean? So I didn?t plan anything. I just went to the opening of the movie and there were a bunch of people there and it was really nice to see them.

Have you heard from your ?Twilight? fans about this movie yet?

I mean, not really. ?Breaking Dawn 2? just came out and we carted that one around the world for a bit. And there were a bunch of people in the crowd in Europe ? because the movie?s out already in Europe ? who said, ?Oh, my god, ?On the Road, we loved it.? Everyone likes to think that we just have teenage fans ? we have girls, women in general, it literally is every single age, well into peoples? 70s. So yeah, people were into it, I think.

There?s a rumor that you?re going to star alongside Ben Affleck in a movie called ?Focus.?

I can confirm that rumor. It?s a comedy, I?m really excited about it, we start shooting in April.

Are there any other projects on the horizon?

Not yet. I would love to find some microproject before then, because April is kind of a ways away, but not yet, haven?t been ?taken? yet.

Is Olive Oil Safe to Cook With? - Shape

For a long time the nutrition community touted the health benefits of olive oil and its role in the Mediterranean diet. But when information about the smoke point of various oils began to surface, EVOO got a bit of a bad rap. Deemed unfit for cooking due to a low smoke point that would turn the healthy fat into a smoky, stinky, free-radical-releasing mess when heated, olive oil was relegated to the salad bowl.

Now, however, it's making a comeback as more is learned about the smoke points of various oils. According to a report published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, olive oil has a smoke point of about 468? Fahrenheit. Considering that the average cooktop heats to between 350? and 375? Fahrenheit, it looks like we are good to go with our favorite oil. In fact, extra virgin olive oil can be heated to 410? Fahrenheit before smoking, so go ahead, saut? away.

To see how other oils stack up, check out this handy infographic from the International Olive Council. Sure does dispel all the cooking oil myths out there!

(AP) ? British astronomer and broadcaster Patrick Moore died Sunday, according to friends and colleagues. He was 89.

He died at his home in the coastal town of Selsey in southern England, according to a statement released Sunday. No specific cause of death was given, but he had heart problems and been confined to a wheelchair.

Moore was well known for his long-running BBC television show "The Sky at Night," which was credited for popularizing astronomy with generations of Britons. He had presented the show for more than half a century.

The statement said he was briefly hospitalized last week when it was determined no more treatment would help him. Instead, his wish to spend his final days at home were honored.

"Over the past few years, Patrick, an inspiration to generations of astronomers, fought his way back from many serious spells of illness and continued to work and write at a great rate, but this time his body was too weak to overcome the infection which set in a few weeks ago," the statement said.

It was signed by various staff members and friends, including Queen guitarist Brian May. May said Moore was irreplaceable and had stirred millions through his broadcasts.

"Patrick will be mourned by the many to whom he was a caring uncle, and by all who loved the delightful wit and clarity of his writings, or enjoyed his fearlessly eccentric persona in public life," May said.

In its obituary, the Daily Telegraph reported that Moore believed he was the only person to have met the first man to fly, Orville Wright, as well as the first man in space, Russian Yuri Gagarin, and the first man on the moon, the late Neil Armstrong.

Moore, who received a knighthood in 2001, had recently celebrated the 55th anniversary of his program. He only missed one episode, because of an illness caused by food poisoning. He was known for his trademark monocle and his occasional xylophone performances and his frequently professed love of cats.

He wrote dozens of books using a 1908 typewriter he received as a gift when he was 8.

Moore had long expressed an interest in traveling into space, but said he wasn't medically fit to do so ? he said he was so large that a special rocket would be needed.

'Freeze ray' powder reveals ice-cream-shaped water

Jacob Aron, reporter

It's not quite a freeze ray, but it's pretty close. A new technique can now "freeze" the structure of water droplets as they bounce, revealing unusual shapes.

Jeremy Marston and colleagues from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, discovered the phenomenon by dripping water onto a surface coated with an extremely water-repellent powder. Tiny particles fully covered drops on impact, preserving them in their deformed state. The video of the process above reveals water that looks like ice cream and a bowling pin.

The team found that the shape "froze" only when a smaller satellite drop was ejected along with the main one (see video). A minimum impact speed of 1.6 metres per second was also required for the effect to occur with water. Bizarre shapes were also observed when more viscous liquids were used, such as drops containing glycerol.

The research will be presented next month at the American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics conference in San Diego, California.

If you enjoyed this post, watch hovering water droplets move like UFOs or see how drops can tap-dance to the beat.

More People Shopping Online In 2012

A couple of weeks ago I predicted that the Christmas holiday season would set a new record for online shopping. Well, it appears that I was right. Are you surprised?

The National Retail Federation reports that 51.8% of shoppers this year plan to shop online. And guess what? 4 out of 10 of them are starting before Halloween. More than 50% will start their shopping online before Thanksgiving. And these consumers plan to purchase nearly 40% of their entire gift selections online.

The volume of Christmas shopping online this year is expected to outpace last year?s shopping by a cool $9 million. That?s nothing to sneeze at!

Have You Started Your Online Christmas Marketing Yet?

These numbers mean three things for businesses ? online and offline:

  1. If you haven?t built an online presence yet, then you?d better start thinking of marketing your business online and presenting consumers with buying options on your website. I expect next year to top this year in online spending, and the numbers likely won?t go down.
  2. If your business has a website but doesn?t allow consumers to purchase through the website, then it?s time to start thinking about e-commerce. More and more people are buying online every day.
  3. The time to start marketing for Christmas shopping is in September. That means you should be planning your Christmas inventory and online e-commerce strategy for the holidays as early as July.

Don?t wait till the last minute to start planning your online Christmas marketing strategy. If you haven?t started thinking about it for this year, you?re way behind the eight ball.

Apple iPad Mini expected to take on Amazon, Google

Apple Inc is expected to make its biggest product move on Tuesday since debuting the iPad two years ago, launching a smaller, cheaper tablet into a market staked out by Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc.

Apple hopes to beat back their charge onto its home turf of consumer electronics hardware, while safeguarding its lead in the larger 10-inch tablet space that even deep-pocketed rivals like Samsung Electronics have found tough to penetrate.

Amazon?s Kindle and Google?s Nexus 7 have grabbed a chunk of the lower end of the tablet market and proved demand for a pocket-sized slate exists, helping force Apple into a space it has avoided and at times derided, analysts say.

A smaller tablet would mark the first device to be added to Apple?s compact portfolio under Chief Executive Tim Cook, who took over from co-founder Steve Jobs just before his death.

?Apple sensed early that they had a real winner with the iPad and that has proven to be correct,? said Lars Albright, co-founder of mobile advertising startup SessionM and a former Apple ad executive.

?They have a large market share, and to protect that market share they have got to be innovative,? he said.

Apple?s invitation-only event, where it is expected to unveil the tablet, gets underway at 10 am PT (1700 GMT) in San Jose.

Wall Street analysts have said for months that Apple was planning a less expensive version of the iPad to take on cheaper competing devices, a move they say might hurt its margins, but prevent its rivals from dominating an increasingly important segment.

The chief rival is Amazon, which proved a 7-inch tablet at around $200 has consumer appeal. The Kindle Fire, released last year for $199, was one of the hottest-selling holiday gadgets. It pressured Amazon?s margins but gave it potentially millions of new high-spending customers.

Amazon sold more than a million Kindles a week during December, paving the way for others like Google with its Nexus 7 to try and beat Apple in a market the company created.

The Internet retailer has now put its second-generation Kindle Fire HD in the market, which it says is the ?best-selling product across all of Amazon worldwide?, based on undisclosed U.S. sales figures and international preorders.

Google?s Nexus 7 tablet, built by Asian manufacturer Asustek, quickly ran out of stock after its July launch.

All three companies will be vying to get their devices on shopping lists during the U.S. holiday season, which traditionally starts next month.

?It?s going to be the go-to holiday gift,? said Michael Yoshikami, founder of Destination Wealth Management, which owns Apple shares.

Price is key

Apple now has just one 9.7-inch iPad, starting at $499. The previous version, or iPad 2, is available for $399.

Jobs famously derided the 7-inch screen, saying such a device should come with sandpaper so users can file down their fingers. But an internal email revealed during a patent trial showed he turned more favorable to the idea by early 2011.

Apple has sold over 84 million iPads so far, with the device accounting for 26 percent of Apple?s fiscal third quarter revenue. Most Wall Street analysts expect Apple?s new tablet to fall between 7 inches and 8 inches in size, saying its price will be crucial to its success.

The ?starting sweet spot? for the tablet would be in the $249-$299 range, according to a survey of over a thousand consumers by Baird Equity Research.

?When asked what the most they would pay for a smaller iPad was, our respondents on average said that they would pay $242 for a 7-inch iPad and $268 for an 8-inch iPad,? William Power, Baird Equity Research analyst, said.

Any erosion in Apple?s industry leading margins also hinges on the price tag. It earned gross margins of 23 percent to 32 percent on U.S. iPad sales between October 2010 and the end of March 2012, according to a July court filing by Apple.

Rivals haven?t fared as well. Amazon?s first Kindle Fire just about breaks even, according to IHS iSuppli estimates, and Google has said its Nexus 7 is being sold at cost.

Topeka Capital?s Brian White argued a smaller tablet could overtake sales of the iPad in a few years. He is forecasting sales of 5 million to 7 million in the December quarter.

Apple shares rose 4 percent on Monday, buoying the benchmark S&P 500 index. While the stock is up 56 percent this year, it is currently down 10 percent from its record high of $705 on September 21, struck by concerns about iPhone-supply disruption at contract manufacturer, Foxconn Technology. Sharp criticism about errors in its Maps service also hurt.

?Apple?s stock is up a ton and it is only logical that it will take a breather after a while,? Yoshikami said. ?I don?t think there is any fundamental issue beyond that.?

Gaming Out The Final Debate - By Andrew Sullivan - The Daily Beast

Team Obama is hammering Romney-Ryan on foreign policy:

Walter Russell Mead?thinks?Romney needs a tie tonight:

Some hope to see Romney deal a series of devastating, knockout blows to President Obama tonight. Anything can happen in this wacky world of ours, but on balance that strategy is unlikely to work. President Obama has thought a great deal about his foreign policy and is well prepared to defend it. It is very hard to play foreign policy gotcha against a sitting president who is well briefed and who, whether one agrees with his policies or not, clearly knows the foreign policy terrain much better than his challenger. That is especially true when the country by and large hopes that the President is right.

Larison?agrees?that a draw would be a good result for Romney:

To the extent that tomorrow?s debate centers on this question of less vs. more U.S. involvement in the Near East, Romney?s own positions will greatly contribute to his losing the debate. If he can direct attention away from his hawkishness and keep the debate at the level of generic complaints about lack of American ?leadership,? Romney might be able to fight his way to a draw.

Zack?Beauchamp?notes?that Romney's foreign policy relies on the "assumption that the way the President speaks and presents himself is a principal determinant of American policy success":

What does this mean for Obama in the last debate? Simply put, force Romney to explain himself. Avoid getting caught up in Romney?s attacks on the administration?s record; keep the spotlight squarely on what Romney would do differently. If Romney won?t defend any specific policy changes, he?ll come off as unprepared to respond to Obama?s arguments; if he does engage, Obama will have strong openings to contrast his own foreign policy vision with Romney?s unpopular Bush III position. That?s the problem with a rhetorical strategy ? sometimes, the other guy gets to talk too.

Tomasky gives?Obama advice:

Romney will say things that are completely incompatible with each other. He'll talk about encouraging moderate Arabs to step forward and then about no daylight with Israel. If the issue is Palestine, those two goals point in totally opposite directions and can't be pursued at the same time. But most people don't know that, and he may get away with it. A straightforward task for Obama tonight, but a big one and possibly a tricky one, is to point out these contradictions.

Ackerman?focuses?on the Benghazi debate:?

Whatever the politics surround it, Benghazi is important. It revealed the U.S. doesn?t understand the forces in the Mideast that the Arab Spring has unleashed, and lacks an understandable approach for dealing with them before they jeopardize American lives. Creating one is part of the foreign policy debate the country deserves. Whether Obama and Romney present that debate this evening is a different story.

Massimo Calabresi wants war with Iran to be debated:

As the U.S. limps home from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Romney and Obama should address explicitly whether they think sanctions [against Iran] are working, whether they should be expanded and under what circumstances they would abandon them in favor of military action.

Bruce Riedel?sees?Pakistan as the most important debate topic:

[W]hat we need to hear from them Monday night is how they will keep the pressure on the terrorists in Pakistan when we bring our troops home from Afghanistan. How will we continue to undertake the necessary counterterror missions from Afghan bases? Will we keep some troops behind to ensure security for our drones and other counterterror assets? How many? How will we persuade Afghans to let us use their bases to help us fight terror? How do we persuade Pakistanis the drones are not their enemy? Should we continue our aid programs? Do we have a plan B if the Afghan Army starts to disintegrate? Do we have a plan to protect the more than 3 million young Afghan girls now going to school in their country who would be treated just like Malala if the Taliban regains power? How do we fight terror and help Malala? These are the really tough questions.

And Michael Crowley?puts?the foreign policy debate in context:

Here?s something to keep in mind as the candidates debate foreign policy on Monday night: The course of domestic politics is hard to predict. The course of world events is impossible to predict. White House hopefuls make all sorts of claims about what they?ll do at home that wind up on the scrap heap. Obama initially opposed a health care mandate. And he attacked John McCain for wanting to tax health care benefits before embracing such a tax in 2009. He might also have lowered expectations on things like climate change if he?d had more warning about the financial crisis.

Foreign policy is even more unpredictable, and it tends to shape presidents? agendas?not the other way around.

How highway bridges sing -- or groan -- in the rain to reveal their health: Just a drop of water can indicate the stability of a bridge

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A team of BYU engineers has found that by listening to how a highway bridge sings in the rain they can determine serious flaws in the structure.

Employing a method called impact-echo testing, professors Brian Mazzeo and Spencer Guthrie can diagnose the health of a bridge's deck based on the acoustic footprint produced by a little bit of water.

Specifically, the sound created when a droplet makes impact can reveal hidden dangers in the bridge.

"There is a difference between water hitting intact structures and water hitting flawed structures," Mazzeo said. "We can detect things you can't see with a visual inspection; things happening within the bridge itself."

The study presents a more efficient and cost-effective method to address the mounting safety concerns over bridge corrosion and aging across the U.S. and beyond.

While impact-echo testing for bridges is nothing new to engineers, the BYU researchers are the first to use water droplets to produce acoustic responses. Current testing relies on solid objects such as hammers and chains.

The idea is to detect delamination, or the separation of structural layers, in a concrete bridge deck. The most common method involves dragging a chain over a bridge and marking spots where dull, hollow sound is produced.

However, this method can take hours to carry out for a single bridge and requires lane closures that come with additional complications.

"The infrastructure in the U.S. is aging, and there's a lot of work that needs to be done," Guthrie said. "We need to be able to rapidly assess bridge decks so we can understand the extent of deterioration and apply the right treatment at the right time."

The study results, published in the October issue of Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation International, could help transform deck surveys into rapid, automated and cost efficient exercises.

The method is as simple as dropping droplets of water on the material and recording the sound. The acoustic response indicates the health of the concrete.

"The response gives you an indication of both the size and the depth of the flaw," Mazzeo said.

Mazzeo said the method could be used to test materials beyond bridges, including aircraft composites, which are susceptible to delamination.

Though the current research is preliminary, the researchers envision a day where bridge deck surveys would take only a few moments.

"We would love to be able to drive over a bridge at 25 or 30 mph, spray it with water while we're driving and be able to detect all the structural flaws on the bridge," Mazzeo said. "We think there is a huge opportunity, but we need to keep improving on the physics."

John Errol Ferguson Case: Daniel T.K. Hurley, U.S. District Judge, Grants Stay Of Execution

MIAMI -- A federal judge on Saturday granted a stay of execution for a convicted mass killer in Florida, who is mentally ill and was scheduled to be put to death on Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Daniel T. K. Hurley granted the motion for a stay in the case of John Errol Ferguson, who was to be executed Tuesday after 34 years on Florida's death row.

"The issues raised merit full, reflective consideration," the court said.

The court will hear three hours of arguments on Ferguson's habeas corpus petition on Friday, according to his attorneys.

They contend that the Florida Supreme Court, in determining that Ferguson could be executed, relied on an outdated definition of competency that conflicts with a 2007 U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Ferguson's attorneys maintain he is insane and that the Constitution prohibits the state from executing him.

"In order for the state to execute him, Mr. Ferguson must have a rational understanding of the reason for, and effect of, his execution," said Chris Handman, an attorney for Ferguson, in an emailed statement. "A man who thinks he is the immortal Prince of God and who believes he is incarcerated because of a Communist plot quite clearly has no rational understanding of the effect of his looming execution and the reason for it."

Attorneys for the state could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday evening.

The 64-year-old Ferguson was convicted of killing eight people including six who died execution-style in 1977 in Carol City, which at the time was the worst mass slaying in Miami-Dade County history. He also was convicted of killing a teenage couple from Hialeah in 1978.

Two accomplices in the drug-related Carol City killings, Beauford White and Marvin Francois, also were convicted of murder. Both were executed in the 1980s.

The state Supreme Court this month upheld a lower court ruling based on testimony by a panel of psychiatrists appointed by Gov. Rick Scott that Ferguson is legally competent to be executed even though he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

The state justices wrote that "Ferguson understands what is taking place and why."

Ferguson's lawyers contend an inmate's awareness of his execution as the state's rationale for putting him to death is not enough.

They argue the inmate must have a "rational understanding," a higher standard than mere awareness. The U.S. Supreme Court set the rational understanding standard in a 2007 case, but the Florida justices noted that the opinion specified that it wasn't attempting to "set down a rule governing all competency determinations."

Ferguson lacks rational understanding, his lawyers say, because he suffers from delusions that he's the "prince of God" and that God is preparing him to return to earth after his execution and save the United States from a communist plot.

Attorneys for Ferguson had previously challenged the procedure that Scott used to deny Ferguson's clemency request, but the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear that appeal and rejected a stay, 7-1. Justice Stephen Breyer would have granted the stay. Chief Justice John Roberts did not participate. Ferguson's attorneys then filed the new appeal.

Access 2012 Day 2: Keeping Books Open ? Learning LibTech

David Binkley Memorial Lecture by Hugh McGuire

What is a book?

The distinction between ?the internet? & ?books? is totally arbitrary, and will disappear in 5 years.

The book is defined as a discrete coherent collection. The boundaries of a book are critically important. The creator?s intention is important. The book is intended to be coherent.

Why are books important?

A book is an best effort at providing all you need to know or feel on a particular topic.

Books govern our knowledge. A book is a:

node of knowledge.

That knowledge (and nodes) shapes our world. It?s the fabric of our world.

Books are a Network

The web was built to transform information. There is an expression of value based on links (what something is linked from and linked to). Each book should have a URL on the internet, and live natively on the web.

Wikipedia might be the best example. An article is edited by multiple authors, links to other articles to give context, and citations begin to organize external sources. Brings together knowledge into a container that makes these pieces useful.

If the web is the most efficient way to disseminate information, and books are the nodes of knowledge, why are books not published online?

What is the Business Model?

No pressing business case to publish directly online. The disruption that this will cause when it happen will be huge.

What does information want?

Information wants to be free. ? Stewart Brand

Information wants to be used, and it doesn?t trust you to know how to use it correctly.

Why are books kept off to the side, apart from the network? The Business Model.

Example (of Business Model)

Build books as a web object, then make it downloadable, printable, etc.

Engagement around the idea happened through twitter, an article on theguardian which discusses the idea from the chapter, and a lot of referrals happened.

On the side: provided analytics for web version of the book.

A webbook can generate interest in ways that an ebook cannot. The ideas in a webbook spread far more quickly, and far more easily than an ebook. Easier to find, built in analytics, and can have different business models.

You have a direct connection with the reader. Whereas with an ebook, you?re one step away.

Why Books Will Live on the Web

  • not defined by format
  • most important nodes of knowledge
  • web is most efficient technology to share
  • disseminate, find, use, build on in ways cannot be imagined by the original

The Process/Model

Creating an ebook is still hard, but online tools like PressBooks/Vook/Atavist/Booktype make it (almost) trivial and free.

The avalanche of books will be overwhelming once the tools become widely known. Other kinds of book writing activity will gain relevance, meaning more and more writing will be ?out there?.

More ebooks means each book is harder to find in promotion, discovery, etc. This ultimately means that those who connect with their readers better will win (which is what the web is great at).

Will ask why there even needs to be a business model, which will bring many books online.

The Book: Book: A Futurist?s Manifesto

Kanye West & Kim Kardashian In Rome | Music News, Reviews, and ...

If Kanye West and Kim Kardashian thought that a trip to Rome would keep them away from the prying eye of the paparazzi, they thought wrong. (Thankfully, this time, the run-in didn?t end in a throwdown.) The lovebirds were spotted in Italy on Thursday (October 18) as they headed out on the town, with Kim dressed in a green peplum dress and Yeezy in black leather pants, a gray henley shirt and a black blazer. KimYe spent the night shopping at Gente and then dining at?Il Bolognese before arriving at Harry?s Bar in Via Veneto. Is the European vacay in honor of reality star Kim?s upcoming 32nd birthday ? or were the two hoping to crash Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel?s wedding somehow?

Brazil fears power outages for soap opera finale

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Brazil's national electricity grid braced for possible power outages Friday night during the television broadcast of the final chapter of a smash soap opera that enthralled Latin America's biggest country for months.

The Electric Energy System Operator said that unless energy generating and distributing companies prepared themselves, the country could suffer power outages at the end of "Avenida Brasil" ? the story of a young woman's vengeance on her nouveau-riche stepmother who abandoned her in a landfill.

A spokesman said officials feared sudden surges in electricity consumption from millions of viewers switching on living room lights, raiding refrigerators and turning on microwave ovens after the end of the 100-minute episode. The spokesman spoke anonymously in accordance with the agency's policies.

"Telenovelas," prime-time soap operas with average runs of 200 episodes, are hugely popular in Brazil, where the plot lines often become front page news and where discussions of the heroes and villains are a major topic of conversation.

Aware of the immense popularity of "Avenida Brasil," President Dilma Rousseff postponed a Friday political rally endorsing the governing Worker's Party mayoral candidate in Sao Paulo. The rally had been set to be held at the same time as the soap opera's final chapter.

"I haven't missed a single episode of 'Avenida Brasil' since it began, and there is no way I will miss the last chapter," said secretary Elizabeth Sarti as she sipped a cup of coffee at a Starbucks. "Me and my husband have invited a group of friends for dinner and for the finale."

The show's enormous success was due to the fact that instead of focusing on the wealthy, it centered on Brazil's burgeoning middle class, which has grown by 40 million people in the last decade. Its main protagonists came from the middle class, while a handful of upper-class characters were relegated to the background.

"It is by far the best telenovela I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot," said Ricardo Fonseca de Martins, a computer analyst. "Its story of revenge, love affairs and of people who rose from poverty is what keeps me glued to the TV set every night."

For Renato Meirelles, CEO of Data Popular, a marketing firm specializing in the middle and lower classes, "Avenida Brasil" tapped into a previously untapped market.

"Here in Brazil, there's a real problem in understanding how the lower middle class thinks," he said. "This lower class doesn't hold up the elite as a model. The reference for these people is not the rich, but rather the neighbor who succeeded."

The Return of a Great 19th-Century Meteor Shower

Long thought nearly extinct, the Andromedid meteor shower staged a surprise outburst last December?and may return in 2018 and 2023

Biela's Comet BIELA'S BITS: Although it split--in more ways than one--during the 19th century, Biela's Comet still rains debris on Earth. Image: Flickr/E. Wei?

Each year as Earth journeys around the sun, it slams into streams of particles that comets have spewed into space. When these particles, known as meteoroids, smash into the atmosphere, they generate streaks of light called meteors. The most reliable meteor showers?the Perseids in August and the Geminids in December?sport about 60 meteors an hour and require nothing more than a dark, moonless sky in order to appreciate them.

Early last December, however, an uncharted meteoroid stream pelted the planet with one of the year's strongest showers. "It was a complete surprise," says Peter G. Brown, an astronomer at the University of Western Ontario. "No one had predicted this." On the night of December 4, 2011, six Canadian radar stations, which send out pulses of radio waves that bounce off meteor trails, detected 50 meteors an hour.

The meteors radiated from the northern constellation Cassiopeia, which borders the constellation Andromeda, and marked a revival of the Andromedids, a shower that achieved notoriety in the 19th century. The meteors result from debris left by Biela's Comet. First seen in 1772, this faint comet swung around the sun every 6.6 years. Before the comet's 1846 passage, it broke in two, and in 1852 it returned as two separate comets.

No one ever saw them again. But in 1872 and 1885, spectacular Andromedid meteor storms took their place, shooting thousands of meteors an hour across the sky: "a real rain of fire," wrote one observer. During the 20th century, though, the Andromedids dwindled to insignificance. The surprise 2011 comeback was their best performance in more than 100 years.

Astronomer Paul Wiegert, also at Western Ontario, modeled the 2011 shower and traced the meteors' origin to particles that Biela's Comet shed in 1649, more than a century before the comet was seen. Furthermore, in work recently submitted to The Astronomical Journal, Wiegert, Brown and their colleagues predict that Earth will soon plow through this newfound meteoroid stream again.

"There are certainly a number of uncertainties involved with trying to predict the meteoroid stream which is associated with a long-gone comet," Wiegert says. "But our best bet is that the shower will return again in 2018."

Fortunately, the Andromedids are civilized visitors: Unlike most meteor showers, which are best seen in the wee hours, bits of Biela's Comet are easiest to see before midnight, when the radiant in Cassiopeia is highest. The radiant is the spot on the sky from which every meteor seems to emanate, but meteors will appear everywhere, not just in Cassiopeia and Andromeda, so it is best to look wherever the sky is darkest. In fact, a dark sky is essential: the meteors are faint, because the particles in the newfound stream are small and their speeds slow; it is kinetic energy that largely determines a meteor's brightness. Thus, observers must escape both the glow of city lights and the brightness of the moon, which washes out faint meteors.
