More People Shopping Online In 2012

A couple of weeks ago I predicted that the Christmas holiday season would set a new record for online shopping. Well, it appears that I was right. Are you surprised?

The National Retail Federation reports that 51.8% of shoppers this year plan to shop online. And guess what? 4 out of 10 of them are starting before Halloween. More than 50% will start their shopping online before Thanksgiving. And these consumers plan to purchase nearly 40% of their entire gift selections online.

The volume of Christmas shopping online this year is expected to outpace last year?s shopping by a cool $9 million. That?s nothing to sneeze at!

Have You Started Your Online Christmas Marketing Yet?

These numbers mean three things for businesses ? online and offline:

  1. If you haven?t built an online presence yet, then you?d better start thinking of marketing your business online and presenting consumers with buying options on your website. I expect next year to top this year in online spending, and the numbers likely won?t go down.
  2. If your business has a website but doesn?t allow consumers to purchase through the website, then it?s time to start thinking about e-commerce. More and more people are buying online every day.
  3. The time to start marketing for Christmas shopping is in September. That means you should be planning your Christmas inventory and online e-commerce strategy for the holidays as early as July.

Don?t wait till the last minute to start planning your online Christmas marketing strategy. If you haven?t started thinking about it for this year, you?re way behind the eight ball.
