Union Co. director of schools back on job after suspension

Union County's director of schools is back on the job.

Wayne Goforth was suspended last October amid budget issues. The board of education accused him of neglecting his duties.

Earlier this year, the board voted to dismiss Goforth. He later sued the four school board members who voted for his suspension, arguing they violated the Open Meetings Act when they met with an attorney before the vote.

At Monday night's meeting, the school board voted to reinstate Goforth.

He says he's happy to be back on the job, and he's looking forward to settling back in .

"I'm looking forward to trying to patch things up and to form a good relationship with the board so that we can further the education of Union County children," he said.

Goforth's contract is effective through June 30. After that, he says his plans are unclear.

Why You Should Not Ignore Social Media Marketing For Your ...

It seems practically everyone today has a social media presence. Why not take advantage of that fact and use social media as a marketing platform? There are thousands of people creating Twitter and Facebook pages each day. Businesses are doing it! So should you! Read the following tips and you can market your business through the social media websites.

Every post you make on your blog should include a link at the top to share it on Facebook. This will let people who visit your blog share what they see with their friends. This can have a multiplying effect and expand the number of viewers. This, in turn, will generate even more visitors to buy your products.

Be certain to add postings and updates often. Give contacts and readers something to anticipate and depend on. Determine your own posting schedule, or consider using a service able to post on your behalf at regular intervals. This is a great way to keep readers interested.

TIP! Consider a giveaway for your profile on the social media sites. Something for nothing is always tempting to your potential customers and the offer may attract them to start following your business site.

Build a party for your Twitter followers. Identify a specific time and date during which all of your followers use hashtags to discuss a trending topic. Ask a few knowledgeable bloggers to chat with your customers. Be sure to choose bloggers who are reputable, and will write about your party as well as bring in people from their crowd.

If you want more people to view your posts on Twitter, use hash tags that are relevant to your example. Figure out which keyword applies best, like #cooking for a recipe or #Toronto for an event you?re hosting in the city. This will get your posts to show up in lists and searches and will let people who aren?t following you see what you have to say.

If your company has a blog that you update with content, make sure you highlight new content after publication on social media sites. Your subscribers will know that there is content up that they have not yet seen.

TIP! Share updates of influential users of Twitter or try mentioning them in posts by having their usernames placed after the ?@? symbol. These people will retweet your post or even write a reply tweet just for you.

Anytime you post on Twitter, make sure a tag is added on. Tags will show after the # symbol. They will allow your updates to show up in feeds for particular subscribers. Choose your tags wisely and look for groups that your target audience would be likely to subscribe to.

Maintain records of progress along the way. Create measurable statistics that track your new activity and followers. Figure out which actions gained you the most action, and then repeat those strategies. If you aren?t monitoring all your social medial marketing results then it becomes impossible to know what works and what doesn?t.

Add catchy titles to your videos when you market on YouTube. They are important if you want to market your business using YouTube. Make sure they are interesting and entice users so much they cannot help but press ?play.? For best results, you should include one or two keywords in the title.

TIP! Make sure you give your content a good headline. Make sure you ask questions that they will want to know the answers for.

This article has provided some dialogue about various ways in which you can reap the benefits of social media for the benefit of your business. Implement all of the strategies you learned and make sure you always expose yourself to new information as well, when you do this you?ll see success before you know it. Your hard work will pay off when millions of users can see your product and your income

Rowling's first novel for adults goes on sale

LONDON (AP) ? British bookshops opened their doors early Thursday and some grown-up Harry Potter fans lined up overnight as J.K. Rowling launched her long-anticipated first book for adults, "The Casual Vacancy."

The lines were shorter and the wizard costumes missing, but the book was published to some of the same fanfare that greeted each Potter tome, with stores wheeling out crates of the books precisely at 8 a.m.

Published five years after the release of the last book in the boy wizard saga, "The Casual Vacancy" is already at No. 1 on Amazon's U.S. chart, and bookmaker William Hill put 2/1 odds on it outselling "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which shifted 2.6 million copies in Britain on its first day.

Many of the early buyers were Harry Potter fans who, like the author, have moved on to more adult fare.

"I just like how much excitement there is about a book," said 23-year-old Grace Proctor, a "massive" Potter fan who was first to buy the book at one London store.

"I think there are going to be people who will hate it just because they can hate it," she said. "But she's such an amazing writer, I don't think she can go wrong."

A story of ambition and rivalry set in the fictional English village of Pagford, the novel recounts the civic warfare sparked when the unexpected death of a town official leaves a vacancy on the governing body.

Rowling has said she was aiming for Dickensian sweep in the multi-character saga, whose doses of sex, satire and swearing mark a distinct departure from wholesome Harry.

Reviews have been mixed. The Associated Press judged it a challenging but rewarding read full of emotion and heart, while The Guardian newspaper said it was "no masterpiece, but it's not bad at all: intelligent, workmanlike, and often funny." Several reviewers felt the lack of easily likable characters might be off-putting to readers.

It's likely nothing Rowling publishes will ever match the success of the Potter books, which have sold more than 450 million copies around the world.

But booksellers are confident "The Casual Vacancy" will be one of the year's best-sellers, whatever reviewers say.

"A lot of children have grown up with Harry Potter. They're now adults who love books," said Susan Sinclair, divisional manager for the Foyles bookstore chain.

"I think it's going to be a really big seller at Christmas. It'll be an easy gift ? but also a good one."

Remarks by Secretary of State Clinton to the UNAIDS Shared ...

?

SECRETARY CLINTON:Thank you. Thank you very much. Michel, thank you, and thank you for your years of leadership. President Yayi, thank you. Everywhere I go at the UN this week where there?s an important issue being discussed, the President is here on behalf of Benin and on behalf of the AU ? (applause) ? and we thank you so much, Mr. President. And thank you, Chairman Ping. Thank you for the work that you have done in raising the visibility and the importance of health-related issues at the African Union.

And good morning to all of you excellencies and ladies and gentlemen. It is such a pleasure for me to be here at this event to demonstrate very visibly America?s commitment to shared responsibility as we all work together toward a historic goal: creating an AIDS-free generation. It is an ambitious goal that we have set, but I know we can reach it. In part, that?s because of the commitment of every one of you and the many others you represent here today. I also know because of the investments that the United States and our partners have been making for decades to understand, prevent, and treat this disease.

But there?s another reason we can foresee an AIDS-free generation, and that is because nations are stepping up to their own responsibilities to care for their own people. Because ultimately, if we are going to win the fight against AIDS, the societies that are the hardest hit will have to lead the way. That?s why the United States, under the leadership of Dr. Eric Goosby, who is the head of our PEPFAR program and a long time physician who treated some of the very first AIDS patients in San Francisco, to an advocate and manager and champion of what we all can do together ? he and I have worked closely together in the Obama Administration to make country ownership a hallmark of PEPFAR and other health programs.

But let me be very clear: Country ownership is not code for abandoning our partners. We are continuing our support, but we are reshaping our programs in ways that make them more sustainable. We want to help our partners, all of you, help set priorities and get the capacity to manage resources, develop your own plans, implement them, and eventually fund them as well. Because in the end, there must be commitment from communities and from governments across the world.

I?m often asked by those who I serve with in the Obama Administration as well as colleagues in Congress, ?Tell me, are our partners really taking ownership of the fight against AIDS?? More and more I can say without hesitation the answer to that question is yes.

I can tell people about Namibia, which now provides half of the financing for its fight against HIV/AIDS. (Applause.) Dozens of doctors and nurses who used to be supported by PEPFAR or the Global Fund are now paid by and overseen by the Namibian Government. Soon many pharmacists and nurses will make this same transition, and I thank Namibia for its leadership.

I can also tell you about South Africa, where the government now accounts for about three quarters of all HIV/AIDS spending in the country. Under the new Partnership Framework that I signed when I was in Cape Town with the Health Minister of the Zuma Administration, South Africa will pay for nearly 90 percent of its HIV/AIDS response by 2017. So let me thank President Zuma and South Africa for their commitment and leadership.

Or I can tell you about Rwanda, which has taken over the management of treatment programs at 70 medical facilities, serving over 30,000 HIV-positive patients. And Rwanda?s increased ownership and capacity then helps to free up our resources to work with Rwanda to train local healthcare workers. That is a priority that Rwanda identified, and it?s one that we are very proud to help Rwanda meet.

So Namibia, South Africa, Rwanda; they are not alone. I could cite many more examples, including many of the countries represented here. But we know that change can be difficult, and some of our practices and habits go back decades. And so often in life it is easier to keep doing the same things the same old way. So when we talk about holding each other accountable, we are really agreeing to help each other overcome inertia, to make hard choices, to do the tough work of finding new ways to work together. And that, to me, is the message that I hope you will take with you, because we have to be more innovative, creative, and smart about the resources we have and how they can best be deployed.

So to that end, the United States is pilot-testing a scorecard that will allow us and our partners to assess our joint programs and progress in building sustainable, country-owned health programs, including our efforts to fight HIV/AIDS. And I know that the members of the AU, Dr. Ping, are undertaking your own efforts along similar lines. That is a great step forward if we are serious about shared responsibility, and we should work together to learn from each other so our efforts are complementary.

So the steps that you are discussing here today represent measurable progress, but to deliver on that promise, the promise of this moment, we have to maintain the progress and build on it. If every nation devastated by HIV follows the example of many of the leaders in this room and steps up to shared responsibility, we won?t just keep up our momentum; we will accelerate our progress and move even faster toward the day when we can announce the birth of an AIDS-free generation.

Thank you all very much. (Applause.)

WikiLeaks' Assange to address U.N. on asylum bid

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to address a meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly via a videolink from his hideout at Ecuador's London embassy, seeking to draw new attention to his efforts to avoid extradition to Sweden over sex crimes allegations.

Ecuador's mission to the United Nations said Tuesday that Assange was scheduled to speak Wednesday alongside foreign minister Ricardo Patino at a specially convened event to discuss his asylum case.

The Australian activist is seeking to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning over sex crimes allegations and has been sheltered inside Ecuador's embassy in London ? beyond the reach of British police ? since he fled there on June 19.

Since then President Rafael Correa has granted Assange asylum, but he is unable to leave the country's tiny mission. If he steps outside the apartment-sized embassy, he will be arrested by police who surround the building.

Assange and his supporters claim that the Swedish sex case is part of a Washington-orchestrated plot to make him stand trial in the United States over his work with WikiLeaks, which has published thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables and other documents. Both Sweden and the U.S. reject that claim.

In his last public appearance, a speech in August from the balcony of Ecuador's embassy, Assange cast himself as the victim of an American "witch hunt" over his secret-spilling website.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that the U.N. was dealing with "much bigger issues" than Assange's fate, but acknowledged there was no current prospect of a resolution to the case in discussions with Ecuador.

"We agreed that we would continue to talk, and we will continue to talk about this issue with the government of Ecuador. But I see no sign of any break through," Hague told reporters at the U.N.

He said the U.K. had an obligation to uphold British and European law by sending Assange to Sweden. "This may go on for some time," Hague said.

Quito and London had clashed over the case, after the U.K. suggested that one potential option would be to invoke a little-known law to strip Ecuador's embassy of diplomatic privileges ? meaning police would be free to move in and detain Assange.

Hague has insisted that diplomats have no intention of carrying out that action, and had simply been briefing Ecuador on all possible legal options.

'Housewives of NJ' star blows friendship up in finale ...

HollywoodNews.com: ?Real Housewives of New Jersey? star Teresa Giudice ended the season last night on a big note as her friendships and relationships came crumbling down.

Giudice has been struggling throughout the season with the other cast members, but the finale put an end to things as her sister-in-law, Melissa Gorga, was accused of being a stripper in the past, states RadarOnline. Giudice claimed to not be involved in Gorga allegedly being outed, but the man who did the outing claims she was a part of it.

?Kim and Teresa want to blow the whistle on her. They had me do this thing, ya know??Melissa! Wow, I almost didn?t recognize you. You look fabulous!?? Angelo Vrohidis commented.

And if ruining the relationship wasn?t enough, Giudice definitely ended things with Jacqueline Laurita as she accused her of being involved in the stripper fiasco.

?It just blows my frickin? mind how Jacqueline works. Chris has told my husband that he met Jacqueline as a stripper, so maybe she got involved because she has some guilty conscience with the whole stripper past. She?s a fu**in? c**t,? Giudice later said.

What did you think about the finale?

Mitt Romney says his campaign doesn?t need a 'turnaround'

(David Becker/Getty Images)Mitt Romney insisted his campaign is not in need of a "turnaround" in spite of polls showing President Barack Obama expanding his lead in battleground states.

In an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes," the Republican presidential nominee rejected criticism from conservative pundits who have called his campaign incompetent.

"It doesn't need a turnaround," Romney insisted, pointing to national polls that have him "tied" with Obama. "I've got a very effective campaign. It's doing a very good job."

Asked about GOP worries over a hidden video that caught him dismissing Obama supporters?which he estimated to be 47 percent of the country?as having a victim mentality and being too dependent on the government, Romney said he was responsible for those comments, not his campaign.

"That's not the campaign," Romney said. "That was me, right?"

Asked about criticism that he's changed his positions on issues like abortion and gay marriage for political reasons, Romney insisted he's still following "the principals I've had from the beginning of my political life."

"But have I learned? Have I found that some things I thought would be effective turned out not to be effective? Absolutely," Romney said. "If you don't learn from experience, you don't learn from your mistakes, why, you know, you ought to be fired."

The former Massachusetts governor also defended his campaign from criticism that he hasn't been specific enough about what policies he would implement as president. Among other things, he talked about how he would handle Social Security, telling CBS's Scott Pelley that he would implement a means testing for future retirees, which would allow lower income Americans to receive more benefits than those with higher incomes.

"Higher income people won't get as much as lower income people," Romney told CBS. "By virtue of doing that, you're able to save these programs on a permanent basis."

And contrary to Obama's claims, Romney insisted he would not lower taxes for high income Americans, but rather would focus on lowering taxes for the middle class.

"There should be no tax reduction for high-income people," Romney said. "What I would like to do is to get a tax reduction for middle-income families by eliminating the tax for middle-income families on interest, dividends and capital gains."

Pelley asked Romney what "big idea" he would pursue as president, pointing to agendas like putting a man on the Moon and the creation of Social Security. Romney pivoted back to a line from his stump speech, insisting his big idea would be to "restore" freedom.

"I want to restore the kind of freedom that has always driven America's economy. And that's allowed us to be the shining city on the hill. The kind of freedom that has brought people here from all over the world," Romney replied. "I want people to come here, legally, to want to be here. I want the best and brightest to say America's the place of opportunity, because of the freedom there to pursue your dreams. So my message is restore the kind of freedom that allows America to lead the world."

Simple Steps To Follow When Buying Real Estate - Maynas Eric Chua

You can find ?experts? in real estate, but what and how much do they really know? Real estate experts didn?t stop the housing market from crashing, so it may not be wise to trust them now. Read on to find some useful tips to help you navigate real estate and be a savvy buyer.

Oftentimes, homes that need major improvements are offered at lower prices. You will save money on the purchase, and you can use that money to repair and upgrade the home as you wish. You can build equity in your home while making improvements that maximize its livability for you and your family. Make sure that you are looking at the potential a house has, instead of focusing on the negatives. An awesome home can often be coaxed from the shadows of superficial ugliness.

Even if your first offer is not accepted, keep hope that there may be methods to make the home more affordable. The seller might take care of a portion of your closing costs, or make some other improvements to the house for you.

TIP! Get an agent or a broker to help you if you want to invest in property. You will have access to more resources through these people.

Have a moderate approach when you negotiate while buying real estate. Many people get too aggressive so that they can get a great deal, and they end up overdoing it and losing it. Feel sure about the deal that you?re making but always defer to your Realtor, as they can provide some very sensible information.

If you are considering renting a home or apartment that has a garden, don?t sign a lease agreement until you find out from the landlord who is responsible for tending the garden. Sometimes the landlord of the rental property takes care of the grounds, but sometimes it is up to you to either do it yourself, or hire someone. Other places have this included in the monthly payments.

If you want to increase the value of real estate that you own, do some remodeling or repairs to the property. This increases the value of your investment by boosting its resale value. The increase in value can sometimes be substantially more than your investment.

TIP! So you are in the market for a new home, but before you begin you need to locate a real estate agent that is qualified. You?ll want to find an agent you can trust.

When selecting an agent to help you with your home search, ask them how long they have lived in the area. If your agent is not familiar with the area, they won?t be able to inform you about many things you may want to know. Ideally, look for an agent who has lived in the area for at least 10 years.

Before settling on a property to purchase, exercise patience, and be realistic with regard to the various choices available. A long while can pass before you locate a property which fits your goals and strategy.

Exercise flexibility when making decisions. You might not have the financial resources to buy your dream house in your dream neighborhood, but you might have enough to choose one of the two. If you can?t find a home in the area you want, shop for one in a similar area.

TIP! Make sure you are familiar with the types of housing available in the neighborhood you would like to live in. You don?t always want to shoot for the biggest house in any particular neighborhood.

When thinking about moving, take some time to explore the area around your potential purchase on the world wide web. Using the web, you can nearly become an expert on the area without even leaving your home. Research how populated the area is and what its unemployment and salary rates are before making any purchases. This will ensure you?ll be making the money you need to when living in the area.

When you are going to buy a house, you know the price the seller is asking for but deciding what your offer will be is something important to think about. Your real estate agent can help you negotiate a good deal that satisfies everyone?s needs.

If you want to buy either a whole building, or space within a building to open a shop, be sure to do your own due-diligence check on the neighborhood to assure its stability. You need to establish your company in a neighborhood that your customer base will be comfortable visiting. Talk to your real estate agent about where you should open a shop.

TIP! If you are recruiting an appraiser to help with your real estate decisions, be sure they are experienced. Do not use an appraiser that is suggested by your real estate agency.

Always do some research about the neighborhood before buying property. If the home is not going to suit your needs, then the purchase will be a long term disappointment to you. If you do research before buying a home, it will help you to know what type of neighbors you will have.

Again, trusting self-appointed real estate ?experts? can lead you to financial ruin. If these experts are so knowledgeable, why did they let the real estate market collapse? Don?t blindly follow their advice. Instead, read over the advice in this article on purchasing real

TIP! Foreclosed homes are often available at below market prices, because the bank will not do any improvements for the buyer. Reason being is that most foreclosed homes have been sitting around for a while without anybody living in it, and that means there has been no upkeep at all.

Self-inflating tire tech saves you at the pump

1 day

When was the last time you checked your tire pressure? If you?re scratching your head, you might want to put a set of Goodyear?s new self-inflating tires on your ride.

The company?s Air Maintenance Technology was rolled out of the lab this week for debut at a car show in Germany. Commercial truckers will be the first to put the rubber to test, but a consumer version is in the works.

As illustrated in the graphic above, a regulator in the tire senses when tire-inflation pressure drops below a pre-set point and opens to allow air flow into the pumping tube. As the tire rolls, deformation flattens the tube, pushing air through the tire to the inlet valve and then into the tire cavity.

All this technology, in Goodyear?s words, eliminates the need for ?external inflation pressure intervention.?

The hassle of interventions aside, maintaining properly inflated tires is key for fuel economy and the life of tire. For every 10 psi (pounds per square inch) of pressure lost, for example, there?s a corresponding one percent loss in miles per gallon, Goodyear explained in a news release.?

A one percent loss in miles per gallon translates to $627 down the drain for a truck that gets 6.6 miles per gallon, drives 100,000 miles a year, and fills up with diesel that costs $4.10 per gallon, according to the company.

Properly inflated tires will also last longer and handle better on the road, Goodyear notes.?

While there?s no price listed yet for the tires, assuming the fuel savings and reduced tire replacement costs pencil out over the life of the vehicle, the technology seems like a wise investment with the added bonus of reducing carbon dioxide emissions via the fuel savings.

And, what?s more, no longer will you need to think about checking your tire pressure, which you probably haven?t done for a long time anyway.?

The Beginnings Of A Usable Mobile Wallet: Target Brings Mobile Coupons To Apple?s Passbook

target-passbookNot that it should come as a big surprise, given that Target was one of the brands showcased in the Passbook demo at Apple's WWDC in June, but today it's official: Target's app is now Passbook-enabled, the retailer has announced. (Although it actually looks like the update was pushed on Wednesday.) The app joins what is now a fast-growing lineup of apps supporting the new mobile wallet-like feature in iOS 6 called Passbook, out this week. Other big brands also offering Passbook integration include American Airlines, United, MLB, Live Nation, Walgreens and Fandango, to name a few. Target's app, however, is one of the more practical ones, because it offers shoppers the ability to save and store mobile coupons - and couponing is one of Passbook's most important use cases that will eventually help move our society from mobile apps to mobile wallets.

Romney tries to seize mantle of change

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Now it's Mitt Romney who wants to be the candidate of change.

Romney is seizing on President Barack Obama's comment that "you can't change Washington from the inside." Grasping for a way to right his campaign and appeal to independents, the Republican nominee says he has what it takes to end the nasty partisanship in the nation's capital.

"I can change Washington," Romney said Thursday. "I will change Washington. We'll get the job done from the inside. Republicans and Democrats will come together."

Romney was expected to press the issue again Friday during a campaign rally in Nevada, a state hard hit by the nation's housing and unemployment woes.

Obama, who ran for president in 2008 on a pledge to fix Washington's combative tone, said in an interview that he had come to the conclusion "you can't change Washington from the inside. You can only change it from the outside." Adding that he wanted people to speak out on issues, he went on to say: "So something that I'd really like to concentrate on in my second term is being in a much more constant conversation with the American people so that they can put pressure on Congress to help move some of these issues forward."

After Romney focused on the "can't change Washington from the inside" segment of Obama's remarks, the president's campaign countered quickly by noting that Romney said just that in 2007 when he was running for the 2008 Republican nomination: "I don't think you change Washington from the inside. I think you change it from the outside."

Both candidates were campaigning Friday in battleground states, with Romney stumping and raising cash in Nevada and Obama holding a rally in Woodbridge, Va., just a short trip from the White House. Obama won both states in 2008.

Polling shows the race tight in both states, though Obama appears to have an edge in Virginia. Democrats with access to internal polling say Obama is up 3 or 4 percentage points over Romney in Virginia, a slimmer margin than in some recent public polling.

Obama has also pulled ahead of Romney in cash on hand, a key measure of a campaign's financial strength. The Democrat has more than $88 million to spend in the campaign's final weeks while Romney has just over $50 million at his disposal.

Romney's campaign is seeking to regroup after a rough stretch that included the emergence of a video in which he tells wealthy donors at a private fundraiser that 47 percent of Americans pay no income tax and that they believe they are victims and entitled to an array of federal benefits. Obama has cast those remarks as a sign that Romney is out of touch with most Americans.

"When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot," Obama said Thursday during a forum on Univision, the Spanish-language TV network.

Romney is also facing criticism from some in his own party that he's spending too much time raising money and not enough time talking to voters in the eight or so battleground states that will decide the election. In response, his campaign added a Sunday rally in Colorado to his schedule and announced a three-day Ohio bus tour that kicks off Monday.

The president will campaign this weekend in Wisconsin, a state Romney is trying to put in play. Republicans are hoping the addition of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to the GOP ticket will help them claim victory there ? or at least force Obama to spend time and money to hold the state.

Even with Election Day under seven weeks away, voters across the country are already casting ballots. By week's end, early voting will be under way in two dozen states.

Obama was also making a play for older voters Friday by speaking via satellite to an AARP convention and taking questions from the group's members. The president's campaign is seeking to gain an advantage with seniors and voters nearing retirement by attacking the Republican ticket's plan for Medicare.

The popular federal entitlement for seniors was the focus of a new television ad from the Obama campaign. The ad, scheduled to air Friday in Colorado, Florida and Iowa, presents a Democratic refrain ? that Romney and Ryan would turn Medicare into a voucher program that could raise seniors' health costs by up to $6,400 a year.

Independent groups have said that a House Republican budget proposal led by Ryan could lead to higher costs for older Americans. But exactly how much is far from clear. The ad relies on the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal-leaning think tank, for the figure it cites.

Supporters of the Ryan plan say competition among private insurance providers could wring waste out of the system and bring down costs.

NASA's solar fleet peers into coronal cavities

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? The sun's atmosphere dances. Giant columns of solar material -- made of gas so hot that many of the electrons have been scorched off the atoms, turning it into a form of magnetized matter we call plasma -- leap off the sun's surface, jumping and twisting. Sometimes these prominences of solar material shoot off, escaping completely into space; other times they fall back down under their own weight.

The prominences are sometimes also the inner structure of a larger formation, appearing from the side almost as the filament inside a large light bulb. The bright structure around and above that light bulb is called a streamer, and the inside "empty" area is called a coronal prominence cavity.

Such structures are but one of many that the roiling magnetic fields and million-degree plasma create in the sun's atmosphere, the corona, but they are an important one as they can be the starting point of what's called a coronal mass ejection, or CME. CMEs are billion-ton clouds of material from the sun's atmosphere that erupt out into the solar system and can interfere with satellites and radio communications near Earth when they head our way.

"We don't really know what gets these CMEs going," says Terry Kucera, a solar scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "So we want to understand their structure before they even erupt, because then we might have a better clue about why it's erupting and perhaps even get some advance warning on when they will erupt."

Kucera and her colleagues have published a paper in the Sept. 20, 2012, issue of The Astrophysical Journal on the temperatures of the coronal cavities. This is the third in a series of papers -- the first discussed cavity geometry and the second its density -- collating and analyzing as much data as possible from a cavity that appeared over the upper left horizon of the sun on Aug. 9, 2007. By understanding these three aspects of the cavities, that is the shape, density and temperature, scientists can better understand the space weather that can disrupt technologies near Earth.

The Aug. 9 cavity lay at a fortuitous angle that maximized observations of the cavity itself, as opposed to the prominence at its base or the surrounding plasma. Together the papers describe a cavity in the shape of a croissant, with a giant inner tube of looping magnetic fields -- think something like a slinky -- helping to define its shape. The cavity appears to be 30% less dense than the streamer surrounding it, and the temperatures vary greatly throughout the cavity, but on average range from 1.4 million to 1.7 million Celsius (2.5 to 3 million Fahrenheit), increasing with height.

Trying to describe a cavity, a space that appears empty from our viewpoint, from 93 million miles away is naturally a tricky business. "Our first objective was to completely pin down the morphology," says Sarah Gibson, a solar scientist at the High Altitude Observatory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colo. who was an author on all three cavity papers. "When you see such a crisp clean shape like this, it's not an accident. That shape is telling you something about the physics of the magnetic fields creating it, and understanding those magnetic fields can also help us understand what's at the heart of CMEs."

To do this, the team collected as much data from as many instruments from as many perspectives as they could, including observations from NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO), ESA and NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), the JAXA/NASA mission Hinode, and NCAR's Mauna Loa Solar Observatory.

They collected this information for the cavity's entire trip across the face of the sun along with the sun's rotation. Figuring out, for example, why the cavity was visible on the left side of the sun but couldn't be seen as well on the right held important clues about the structure's orientation, suggesting a tunnel shape that could be viewed head on from one perspective, but was misaligned for proper viewing from the other. The cavity itself looked like a tunnel in a crescent shape, not unlike a hollow croissant. Magnetic fields loop through the croissant in giant circles to support the shape, the way a slinky might look if it were narrower on the ends and tall in the middle -- the entire thing draped in a sheath of thick plasma. The paper describing this three-dimensional morphology appeared in The Astrophysical Journal on Dec. 1, 2010.

Next up, for the second paper, was the cavity's density. Figuring out density and temperature was a trickier prospect since one's point of view of the sun is inherently limited. Because the sun's corona is partially transparent, it is difficult to tease out differences of density and temperature along one's line of sight; all the radiation from a given line hits an instrument at the same time in a jumble, information from one area superimposed upon every other.

Using a variety of techniques to tease density out from temperature, the team was able to determine that the cavity was 30% less than that of the surrounding streamer. This means that there is, in fact, quite a bit of material in the cavity. It simply appears dim to our eyes when compared with the denser, brighter areas nearby. The paper on the cavity's density appeared in The Astrophysical Journal on May 20, 2011.

"With the morphology and the density determined, we had found two of the main characteristics of the cavity, so next we focused on temperature," says Kucera. "And it turned out to be a much more complicated problem. We wanted to know if it was hotter or cooler than the surrounding material -- the answer is that it is both."

Ultimately, what Kucera and her colleagues found was that the temperature of the cavity was not -- on average -- hotter or cooler than the surrounding plasma.

However, it was much more varied, with hotter and cooler areas that Kucera thinks link the much colder 10,000 degrees Celsius (17,000 F) prominence at the bottom to the million to two million degrees Celsius (1.8 million to 3.6 million degrees Fahrenheit) corona at the top. Other observations of cavities show that cavity features are constantly in motion creating a complicated flow pattern that the team would like to study further.

While these three science papers focused on just the one cavity from 2007, the scientists have already begun comparing this test case to other cavities and find that the characteristics are fairly consistent. More recent cavities can also be studied using the high-resolution images from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which launched in 2010.

"Our point with all of these research projects into what might seem like side streets, is ultimately to figure out the physics of magnetic fields in the corona," says Gibson. "Sometimes these cavities can be stable for days and weeks, but then suddenly erupt into a CME. We want to understand how that happens. We're accessing so much data, so it's an exciting time -- with all these observations, our understanding is coming together to form a consistent story."
