Apple Considers Launching Ad Exchange - Business Insider

LinkedIn

Apple's Todd Teresi

?

Is Apple planning to launch an ad exchange, the way Facebook and Twitter have done?

That's the rumor.

We heard it from an executive who is one of the biggest players in online advertising.

We can't confirm it. And, of course, the ad business is awash with rumors. (And, to give the full context, a couple of other sources we talked to said they'd heard nothing of the kind.)

But ... it's interesting that a bunch of people in the mobile ad business expect, even want, Apple to launch one, perhaps inside iAd, its existing mobile ad network.

In theory, an ad exchange would work by allowing advertisers to target users as they enter the Apple eco-system on their iPads, MacBooks, various web sites and apps. The system would alert advertisers that an Apple user arrived. Any advertiser tracking that user with a cookie (a piece of software that records previous web sites you've looked at) could then bid to serve an ad targeting that user.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was even asked about it at the AllThingsD conference recently. He said that advertising was not a core business to Apple, but Apple wanted developers who makes Apps for Apple products to get revenue from them that would incentivize them to make more products:

?We got into mobile advertising because we want developers to make money? It wasn't about Apple making money.? Cook also noted Apple's mobile advertising business isn't "large enough to be core" to the company.

However, Apple did make a big move in mobile ad sales last year: It hired Todd Teresi, formerly vice president of Media Solutions at Adobe, to run iAd. Teresi is also a veteran of Yahoo, where he ran its third-party publisher ad network. He also did a spell at Quantcast, the audience measurement company.

If Apple wanted to start an ad exchange, they hired one of the best qualified guys to manage it, in other words.

And then there's Apple alumnus Dan Grigorovici, who is now CEO at AdMobius, a mobile advertising measurement company. He used to be at Quattro Wireless before it was acquired by Apple and turned into iAd. He thinks Apple would have a "tremendous" ad exchange on its hands, if only the company mustered the desire to actually build it. Here's what he told AdExchanger:

?Apple owns the device, the app ecosystem, the ad SDK, the transactional system (iTunes, etc.), multiple media channels (online, TV - albeit that's small today, smartphones, tablets), multiple content categories (music, movies, etc.),? Grigorovici commented. ?From that standpoint, I had always believed that if Apple plans to evolve the ad business to be more important, they have probably the best opportunity for cross-channel advertising, and one of the best data assets out there.?

What is holding Apple back, Grigorovici noted, is ?the [low] fill rate and the advertiser demand for cross-OS scalable solutions?[unless Apple becomes] more interested in collaborating with and mediating competing ad businesses in the ecosystem, in order to fulfill advertiser's needs. So there is a dilemma here: Apple?s closed ad ecosystem offers tremendous benefits and differentiation, but it fundamentally does not solve the scale problem.?

Lastly, Mark Grether, COO at Xaxis (an online ad buying firm), made this remarkable prediction for 2013:

In particular, both Twitter and Apple (tablet/mobile) could conceivably launch their own RTB exchanges to take advantage of the benefits they see occurring to Facebook ? and advertisers ? through the launch of FBX.

Twitter is on the cusp of launching an ad exchange, we noted yesterday. So the first half of his prediction has already come true.

Google won't approve Glassware that use facial recognition at this time

Google Glass

Taking into account user feedback, the policy will evolve in the coming weeks and months

Writing on its official Project Glass Google+ page, Google explained that because of privacy concerns it will not be approving Glassware (apps for Glass) that take advantage of facial recognition technology. While a consumer release of Glass may still be several months away, there are now enough people out there with Explorer Edition units that Google felt the need to address this concern. One of the biggest struggles it is fighting with Glass currently is concerns over privacy, and following its current company line on the use of facial recognition it thinks that now is not the time to include it.

Google says that it is listening to feedback from early users of Glass, and will be evolving its policy on facial recognition software in the coming weeks and months. We of course know that with a little bit of hacking non-approved Glassware including facial recognition could easily be added to Glass, but in these fragile stages of building public perception of the product it is best for Google to have an official stance here.

Happy Families Vintage Card Game.

One Happy Family.

One Happy Family.

Every time we venture to England, we find things we?ve never seen before. Dealers are always kind to explain their wares to the ?naive Americans?. On our last trip, we spotted some crazy cool playing cards. The vintage cards featured characters with extremely large heads and bright red lips. As usual, we are drawn to visually appealing vintage arts and crafts. This time, when we inquired about them, the dealer looked astonished; he couldn?t believe we?d never heard of the Happy Families game. He and his wife explained the jest of the game and said it was a popular game in the UK.

The original card game was developed in 1851 by John Jaques, the creator of tiddlywinks and snakes and ladders. Artist John Tenniel is often credited with drawing the original illustrations of the family members because of the similarities to his work with Lewis Carroll?s ?Alice?s Adventures in Wonderland?. Multiple versions of the game were manufactured by several companies and versions are still be produced today. The deck, which we purchased, was made in Bavaria c. 1925 by the J.W. Spear (& Sons) Company. They had a factory in Nuremberg Germany and in Enfield UK (1932). The company has an interesting history because of World War II. Since they were Jewish, they were forced to relinquish their Germany plant and move their operations to the UK. One son died in a concentration camp. A sad family story.

?

The entire Happy Families card game.

The entire Happy Families card game.

We like the Happy Family cards. Our deck has 9 complete families, each with a father, mother, son and daughter. The families are based on the father?s occupations. The object of the game is to collect as many whole families you can, like the Go Fish card game. The illustrations are wonderful and quite interesting. We?re sure some talented customer will find a way to use or repurpose them.

If we had to pick our neighbors, we?d pick the Saw family; they look fairly normal. On? the other hand, we?re a bit concerned about the Stain family! Maybe they?re just having a really bad day. And Master Thread likes those BIG scissors a-little too much. We think this neighborhood may be addicted to Botox!

?

Two more happy families.

Two more happy families.

In our neighborhood, we have a Teacher family, a Delivery family, a Real Estate family, a Manufacturer family, an Antique family. Who?s in your neighborhood?

Rock bands raise money for Boston Marathon victims

BOSTON (AP) ? City residents rocked Thursday at a benefit concert for victims of the deadly Boston Marathon bombing, jamming to songs from the J. Geils Band, Boston and other musical acts and even laughing at a joke about the capture of a bombing suspect.

The Boston Strong Concert kicked off with the rock band Boston playing songs including its 1970s hit "More Than a Feeling."

"Tonight, we are all Boston," lead singer Tommy DeCarlo declared to a crowd of thousands of people, including victims and first responders, at the TD Garden.

Concertgoer Harry Donovan said Boston residents weren't going to let "any violence, any hatred bring this town down."

"This city took a hit, there's no doubt, but Boston, like a lot of other cities, is resilient," said Donovan, of nearby Wellesley.

The show was to feature acts including Aerosmith, James Taylor and Jimmy Buffett, Dropkick Murphys, New Kids on the Block and Carole King.

Country singer Jason Aldean performed at the show, which was to include more than a dozen acts. Comedian Steven Wright also was part of the show's lineup.

More than once, the words "Boston Strong" were met with cheers and fist pumps from the energetic crowd.

"I love that phrase," enthused Boston comic Lenny Clarke, whose cathartic set featured a foul-mouthed, one-man reenactment of the capture of bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. "You know what I don't love? 'Shelter in place.'"

Boston area residents were locked down, told to shelter in place, a few days after the April 15 bombing while authorities searched for Tsarnaev, who was found hiding in a boat in a backyard in suburban Watertown. Tsarnaev's older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, had died after a shootout with police.

The suspects, ethnic Chechens from Russia, are accused of setting off two pressure cooker bombs packed with shrapnel near the marathon's finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others. Their mother has insisted they are innocent.

Concert proceeds will go to One Fund Boston, the compensation fund established by Gov. Deval Patrick and Mayor Thomas Menino to help bombing victims.

The amount of money raised by the concert won't be available until next week, a spokesman for the event's producer said. Ticket prices for the sold-out show ranged from $35 to close to $300.

As Software Trumps Hardware In The World Of Payments, VeriFone Partners With CardSpring For Card-Linked Services

CardSpringThe world of payments is being turned over by the likes of Square, PayPal, Stripe and others, which are tackling the idea of payments based on hardware terminals, and new services that focus on innovations in smartphones and tablets with functionality coming by way of software iterations. Not to be outdone, incumbents like point-of-sale device maker VeriFone are also cutting their own deals to keep up in the game. The latest is a deal with CardSpring,?a payments startup?founded by former Netscape engineers, which will allow thousands of merchants to enable loyalty programs, point-of-sale discounts, and more using customers' existing debit and credit cards.

For pundits, it's better to be confident than correct

May 28, 2013 ? It would be nice to think the pundits we see yelling on TV and squawking on Twitter are right all the time. It turns out they're wrong more often than they are right.

Now two Washington State University economics students have demonstrated that it simply doesn't pay as much for a pundit to be accurate as it does to be confident. It's one thing to be a good pundit, but another to be popular.

"In a perfect world, you want to be accurate and confident," says Jadrian Wooten. "If you had to pick, being confident will get you more followers, get you more demand."

Wooten made his discovery with Ben Smith, a fellow doctoral candidate in economics. Smith originally wanted to test the accuracy and confidence of stock market pundits, taking inspiration from stock watcher and CNBC host Jim Cramer, whom Wooten describes as "the yelling genius that he thinks he is."

But stock predictions rarely come with a date at which one could say a pundit was right or wrong. Sporting events do, so Smith made a software program to sort through more than 1 billion tweets for predictions of the 2012 baseball playoffs and World Series and the 2013 Super Bowl.

The program pulled out tweets with team names, nicknames and expressions commonly associated with predictions, like "beat." Where they might rate the confidence of a television pundit by how loudly he or she yelled, a scale of word strength pegged words like "vanquish," "destroy" and "annihilate" as expressions of confidence.

Their hypothesis: Pundits have a false sense of confidence because that's what the public, seeking to avoid the stress of uncertainty, craves.

"They're trading away some of their accuracy to be a Jim Cramer," says Wooten. "'I might not be right all the time but I can yell louder than this other guy.'"

Wooten and Smith looked at both professional pundits -- celebrities with verified Twitter accounts -- and amateurs claiming some sports expertise. Both were worse at predicting than the 50-50 odds of a coin toss. Professionals were right 47 percent of the time, a hair better than the 45 percent accuracy of amateurs. But the professionals were more confident, scoring a .480 confidence rating to the amateurs' .313.

And confidence pays -- far better than accuracy.

If a professional pundit accurately predicted every game of the baseball playoffs and series, Wooten and Smith estimated his or her Twitter following would increase 3.4 percent. An amateur would get 7.3 percent more followers.

But a professional whose confidence knows no bounds would increase his or her following by nearly 17 percent and an amateur would see a nearly 20 percent rise in followers.

The outlier of the field could be Nate Silver, the statistician and New York Times political blogger. He's both cautious and accurate. But owing in large part to his correctly calling all 50 states in the recent presidential election, he's popular.

By and large, say Smith and Wooten, pundits get a better audience through confidence and the excitement it generates.

"There is some psychological literature on the idea that people hate uncertainty," says Smith. "The fact that people don't like uncertainty would suggest that they don't like the idea of a Nate Silver sort of person standing up there and saying, 'I'm only 90 percent sure.'"

"I like to think of it like a roulette wheel," says Wooten." If you have somebody just placing bets, that person is kind of boring. But if you have someone going, 'Oh, yeah! It's red!' and they are confident, that's the person that you are interested in."

Smith and Wooten outlined their findings earlier this year at the 50th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Economics and Finance. They plan to publish a paper on their method in an open-source journal, helping researchers, business people and others pose all sorts of questions to the vast amounts of data on the Internet.

Connected Data to merge with Drobo, bring Transporter features to Drobo products

Connected Data, makers of Transporter, just announced that it's entered into a merger agreement with Drobo. As a refresher, Transporter is a cloud-based file sharing appliance that provides Dropbox-like functionality without the recurring subscription costs. Drobo's best known for its Ethernet, Thunderbolt, FireWire and USB-based multi-drive storage devices which offer seamless expandability. Presumably we'll start seeing some of Connected Data's file sharing features on upcoming Drobo products. The two companies have 30 days to finalize the merger process -- and perhaps even come up with a clever new brand. We vote for DroboPorter ourselves. PR after the break.

NAFCU urges FHFA rethink on lender-placed insurance | HousingWire

The National Association of Federal Credit Unions wrote to the Federal Housing Finance Agency asking that they rethink certain practices related to lender placed insurance rules.

NAFCU is trying to relieve pressure for credit unions and is continuously requesting the FHFA and other government entities address their member's concerns.

Currently, NAFCU explains that the FHFA is debating prohibitions in regards to mortgages sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

"The FHFA is considering requiring the Enterprises to prohibit sellers and servicers from receiving, directly or indirectly, remuneration associated with placing coverage with or maintaining placement with particular insurance providers," the letter stated.

The trade association explained that they, as not-for-profit cooperative entities, generally enter into third-party agreements specifically designed to reduce cost for member-borrowers.?

However, if?the FHFA moves forward with the prohibitions, NAFCU strongly urges the agency to take every precaution necessary to ensure that it does not unintentionally create unwarranted roadblocks to lenders, the letter explained.

FOR KIDS: New bag keeps food fresh longer

Invention harnesses oxygen-trapping power of iron

Iron-ing out the bugs

Carolyn Jons, 15 , has developed a new type of plastic bag for foods. Its "nano-iron" helps keep microbes from spoiling leftovers.

Food doesn?t stay fresh forever, even in a refrigerator. Fuzzy mold can grow on fruit, veggies and other items even if they?re kept in a sealed container. But a 15-year-old inventor now has developed a new type of resealable bag that can keep food fresh longer. It relies on a pouch of powder that chemically sucks oxygen out of the bag. And this could keep fungi and even some food-poisoning germs from growing.

Carolyn Jons of Eden Prairie High School in Eden Prairie, Minn., presented her results May 13 in Phoenix, Ariz., at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair. The Society for Science & the Public, which created the fair in 1950, still runs the competition. (SSP also publishes Science News?and?Science News for Kids.)?

(AP) ? One of two suspects shot by police following the slaying of a British soldier in London last week has been released from the hospital and taken to a police station for questioning, police said Tuesday.

The release came as new details emerged about links between the other main suspect and a radical Islamic cleric in Kenya who had been sanctioned by the United States for being part of a terrorist network.

The case centers on the brazen killing of off-duty soldier Lee Rigby, 25, who was slain by two men wielding knives and meat cleavers near his barracks in southeast London's Woolwich area. The two suspects were shot by police and arrested on suspicion of murder.

The younger suspect, 22-year-old Michael Adebowale, was judged well enough to be released from the hospital and taken into police custody. Police said he is also suspected of attempted murder of a police officer.

The other suspect, Michael Adebolajo, 28, remains in a hospital in stable condition under armed guard. He was seen on a video boasting about the killing minutes after the attack. His family on Tuesday released a statement of condolence to Rigby's family, expressing horror and distress over the killing.

"Nothing we say can undo the events of last week," the statement read. "However, as a family, we wish to share with others our horror at the senseless killing of Lee Rigby and express our profound shame and distress that this has brought on our family."

Police have arrested a total 10 suspects ? including those shot at the scene ? in connection with last Wednesday's killing.

In Kenya, police said they believed Adebolajo, a British citizen, had earlier associated with a radical Kenyan Muslim cleric who tried to help him join an al-Qaida-linked rebel group in neighboring Somalia.

Muslim cleric Aboud Rogo Mohammed, who has since been killed, helped Adebolajo in his attempt to travel to Somalia to wage jihad, or holy war, against the country's United Nations-backed government, a senior Kenyan police official said Tuesday. The official insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press on this matter.?

Adebolajo was arrested with five other young men in November 2010 in Kenya near the Somalia border and eventually returned to Britain.

Mohammed had been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for allegedly facilitating travel to Somalia for many young Kenyans wanting to join Somalia's al-Shabab rebels, who have launched terrorist attacks in and outside Somalia. The Treasury Department also charged that Mohammed was fundraising for al-Shabab.

In London, a worker for a rights group that lobbies on behalf of suspected terrorists said Adebolajo approached the group several months ago and appeared stressed and under pressure.

Arnaud Mafille, a case worker with advocacy group CagePrisoners, said Tuesday he believed Adebolajo was troubled by alleged abuse during detention in Kenya and "extreme harassment" by British security officials.

A friend of Adebolajo's alleged last week that agents from MI5, the U.K. domestic spy agency, tried to recruit him after he returned from Kenya. Kenyan officials have denied torturing Adebolajo.

The extensive revelations about Adebolajo's alleged attempts to link up with international terrorists have raised questions about whether Britain's intelligence services could have done more to prevent last week's killing. Britain's parliamentary intelligence committee said Tuesday it will investigate whether U.K. intelligence services fell short before the killing of Rigby.

British officials say the two main suspects had been known to them for some time as part of previous investigations.

With tensions high, Britain's counter-terrorism police were investigating a Sunday evening attack on two prison officers. Michael Spurr, chief executive of the National Offender Management Service, said in a statement that a prison officer was taken hostage for four hours by three Muslim prisoners at the Full Sutton prison in Yorkshire.

A second officer tried to aid the hostage, Spurr said. Both officers received hospital treatment.

Pasta Emilia, Surry Hills | Grab Your Fork: A Sydney food blog

fresh pasta drying on racks at pasta emilia surry hills

It used to be a molasses factory. Nowadays it's home to Pasta Emilia, a family-run business specialising in organic pasta and sauces that first opened in Bronte in 2004. The converted warehouse is the perfect setting for its bustling cafe, set up like an Italian dining hall with high ceilings, communal tables and bentwood chairs.

Crates and scooter at the entrance to Pasta Emilia

Central to the hubbub of activity is co-owner Anna Maria Eoclidi. She seems to know just about everyone, a radiant ever-smiling host who flits between tables, the kitchen and the service counter with a natural ease.

Eoclidi hails from the Emilia-Romagna region, famous for so many foods but primarily renowned for its pasta. More than half of the pastas you are likely to know (ravioli, tortellini, tagliatelle, lasagna, cannelloni, just for starters) originated here.

In Emilia-Romagna you'll find Modena (of balsamic vinegar fame), Reggio Emilia (parmigiano reggiano), Parma (can you say prosciutto?) and Bologna (hello bolognaise). It's a food lover's paradise.

At Pasta Emilia, the menu is short and sweet. There's a marked focus on good quality produce with breakfast options that run from organic eggs and?guanciale Italian bacon (made from pork cheeks) to?raw organic honey?with Mungalli Creek ricotta on Iggy's sourdough toast. Stay virtuous with poached eggs, steamed kale and ricotta or go all out with scrambled eggs and truffle butter served with homemade baked beans on toast.

On a Friday lunch, the dining room is a happy chaos of patrons. Lunch options include panini sandwiches with prosciutto, preservative-free ham or biodynamic ricotta ($8.50-$10) and antipasti (mixed salumi and/or cheeses with bruschetta at $13-$23) but we only have eyes for the pasta.

strozza preti with bolognese sauce at pasta emilia surry hills
Strozza preti al ragu di carne and parmigiano $12 small

There are four choices on the pasta menu, but the strozza preti is worth prioritising. Strozza preti are short twists of hand-rolled pasta, beautifully uneven in size and shape but perfect for catching hearty chunks of rich and saucy beef ragu. In Italian, strozza preti translates to "priest strangler" and some say it's because some greedy priests scoffed down this delicious treat so fast that they ended up choking, sometimes ending in death!

There's a satisfying chewiness to these twisted ropes of pasta, coated with a slow-simmered tomato sauce studded with tender beef. Strozza preti is a particular specialty of the Emilia region, with Parmesan cheese traditionally incorporated into the pasta dough.

Tortellini originated in the Emilia region too, specifically Bologna and Modena. Tortelli are a larger version - here these pasta pockets are filled with a mix of kale flowers, pecorino and potato.

The handmade tortelli are smooth as silk but also have a pleasing al dente bite. There's a fresh zing from the salsa verde and a salty hit from the anchovy reclining on top.

Kremlin 'outraged' by electoral fraud... in Eurovision song contest

Allegations of voter fraud in Russia are nothing new. But this time it's the Kremlin making them.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / May 22, 2013

Winner of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Emmelie de Forest of Denmark who won with her song 'Only Teardrops,' holds the winners trophy as she poses for photographers following the final of the Eurovision Song Contest at the Malmo Arena in Malmo, Sweden, last Saturday. The Kremlin today said that they found a case of alleged voting fraud in Eurovision song contest.

No, it's not the 2011 Duma elections, which experts from across Russia's political spectrum?now agree were probably falsified?on a huge scale. That has never been the subject of official outrage, or even investigation.

This is something far more important: the continental song competition, Eurovision.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists?yesterday?that he was "outraged" to learn that the voting system in neighboring Azerbaijan had eliminated the votes cast for Russian Eurovision contestant Dina Garipova in that country. Voters registering their preferences by cellphone had given a second-place finish to Ms. Garipova ? which should have given her 10 points in the overall contest ? but they had somehow disappeared in the reporting process.

"We can?t be happy with the fact that 10 points were stolen from our participant, primarily in terms of how this event is organized," Mr. Lavrov?said during a previously scheduled joint press conference?in Baku with Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.?

"We have agreed with Elmar Mammadyarov that we will discuss joint measures to ensure that this outrageous action will not go unanswered," Lavrov added.

The head of Azerbaijan's broadcasting company, Jamil Guliyev, quickly acknowledged that some sort of mistake had occurred.

"We sincerely hope that this case, which was probably initiated by some groups, would not cast a shadow on brotherly relations of Azeri and Russian people," he told journalists.

Contestant: Why the fuss?

The mammothly popular annual singing contest, held last Saturday in Malmo, Sweden, featured contestants from 39 countries from the Atlantic to the shores of the Caspian Sea. An estimated 125 million TV viewers,?each cheering for their country's contestants as avidly as any football team,?tuned in to the Eurovision finals, plus countless more around the world via Internet streaming.

Competition for the honor of hosting Eurovision is almost as serious as for the Olympics, and?Russia went wild when Moscow won the right to stage the event back in 2009.

The winner of each year's multinational contest is determined by a complicated system ??which is supposed to be foolproof ? in which each country votes for all entries except their own.

Votes cast by TV viewers in each country by cellphone (or through social media such as?Facebook) makes up half the decision, while a national panel of judges makes the other half. At the end of the process, each country submits a ranking for all contestants ? except its own ? by giving 12 points to the winner, 10 points to the runner-up, and so on. The results, totaled for all of Europe, determine the overall winner.

This year Denmark's Emmelie de Forest won by a landslide, with 281 points, followed by Azerbaijan's Farid Mammadov with 234 points (full table?here). Russia's Garipova came fifth with 174 points.

The missing 10 points from Azerbaijan didn't affect Garipova's standing, and she graciously told the Russian media today that?it would be better to drop the rising demand for an international investigation into the alleged vote-rigging scandal.

"To be honest, I don?t know why an investigation is needed," Garipova said. "I am satisfied with the result of the contest."

Inferiority complex

Eurovision's organizers?said in a statement?that they will take swift action to preserve the event's apolitical nature and prevent any future abuses.?But the scandal is far from dying down in Russia.?

Some Russian conservatives claim it's just another example of Western "double standards," in which those who never miss an opportunity to lecture Russia about human rights and democracy turn out to be dirty themselves.

Former Kremlin adviser Sergei Markov told the Ekho Moskvi radio station?today?that the Eurovision result was "direct forgery and fraud."

Perhaps tongue-in-cheek, Mr. Markov went on: "In general it's better when we non-Europeans are accusing them of falsifying elections than when they are accusing us?. And here [with Eurovision] we have such a fraud, and the whole world has seen it with their own eyes."

Viktor Shenderovich, once a top political satirist?who was exiled from the mainstream media?after Vladimir Putin came to power, says the Russian response, and particularly Lavrov's official outrage over a singing contest, is an unseemly display that reveals a persecution complex at the heart of Kremlin behavior.

"This comes from the inferiority complex than haunts our state, which is really funny when you recall that we're a country the size of a continent that has a vast nuclear arsenal," Mr. Shenderovich says.

"When a mature adult from the Foreign Ministry starts taking such things seriously, well, it can only mean that we have lost any sense of self-irony. On the surface it looks silly, but when you examine the roots of this affair you can't help feeling sad?. Whenever Russia feels it's been shortchanged in anything, be it a song contest or a sporting event, our people immediately begin claiming that there's a plot against us. But, as the old Russian saying goes, 'a bad dancer's boots are always too tight,'" he adds.?

UFC 160: KJ Noons on Cerrone, jitters, cutting weight, fatherhood ...

UFC lightweight prospect, KJ Noons discusses his upcoming first fight in the octagon against Donald Cerrone, fatherhood, cutting weight, and his disappointing loss to Ryan Couture.

KJ Noons has been talking with his fists, either in a cage or in a ring, for more than a decade. A veteran of kickboxing, boxing and mixed martial arts, his crossover into the UFC is the last of the bigger names to come from the Strikeforce roster. Coming off a ridiculously controversial decision loss to Ryan Couture, Noons relishes the idea of being the underdog, and hopes to find better footing inside the octagon.

He'll not be met with an easy task, though. Donald Cerrone stands ready to try to get his own career back on track, and presents a serious challenge to most anyone in the UFC's lightweight division. I spoke with KJ recently, and got his thoughts on this latest battle he'll be embroiled in at UFC 160. Here's what he had to say:

    Cutting Weight

You know what? It's actually getting easier as I get older. I've changed my diet and eating habits. I'm not eating like a slob like I used to [laughs]. When I was younger, I used to eat like a slob and cut the weight in one day. Now, my whole lifestyle has changed and I'm eating better, so the weight cut is really not that bad at all. It's actually easier. You've just got to stay on top of it.

Moving Past the Controversial Loss to Ryan Couture

Yeah, it was unpleasant. There were a few things - you had to win to get into the UFC, that was number one. Number two, I only get half a paycheck. I couldn't really do anything about it, and they could not overturn it, so I had to dust myself off and get ready for the next fight. The UFC didn't look at it as a loss, so they brought me in and gave me a great first opponent. The fans knew I won, so I wasn't too discouraged by the situation. It's all good.

    2.5 to 1 Underdog

I don't really mind. I actually like being the underdog. If those are the odds, then whoever makes the odds, if they're so confident, then they should bet the money on it, and see what happens on fight night.

    UFC Jitters

I think I'll be okay. I've been the main event in MMA a few times and had almost 30 pro fights between boxing and kickboxing. I'm pretty confident that if I am nervous or have butterflies, and I probably will have butterflies, I'll be able to turn that into energy and be able to put it towards the fight.

    Donald Cerrone

He's a well rounded fighter. I think he's going to try a little bit of everything, so I trained for everything. There will be stand-up in there for all the fans. It's still an MMA fight, though. We train for the fight to go anywhere, and I'm ready for it to go anywhere.

I don't know exactly where in the Top 10 I would belong, but after I beat him, I definitely think I deserve to be somewhere in that range.

    Fatherhood

It totally makes you more motivated to be successful. It also makes you a lot more grounded. You're no longer living the single life, going out partying it up or anything like that. You're sitting at home, taking care of the family, chilling, training and getting ready for the fights. It's really relaxing, if anything.

    Exciting Fighters

Truthfully, I just think it's something you're born with. Either you've got it or you don't. I train hard - of course I train hard, but you've got a lot of guys that train hard that don't go for the finishes or try to make their fights more exciting, you know what I mean.

You can follow KJ via his Twitter account, @kjnoons

NTSB: Bridge collapse in Wash. is wake-up call

SEATTLE (AP) ? The chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board said Saturday the bridge collapse in Washington state is a wake-up call for the nation.

"This is a really significant event and we need to learn from it, not just in Washington but around the country," Debbie Hersman said after taking a boat ride on the Skagit River below the dramatic scene where a truck bumped against the steel framework, collapsing the bridge and sending two vehicles and three people falling into the chilly water.

Investigators need to find out what happened in Washington and if it could be repeated at similar bridges around the country, Hersman said.

"At the end of the day it's about preventing an accident like this," she said.

Her team will spend a week to 10 days looking at the bridge, talking to the truck driver whose vehicle hit it, and examining maintenance documents and previous accident reports.

Other over-height vehicles struck the Skagit River bridge before the collapse on Thursday, she noted. Investigators are using a high tech 3-D video camera to review the scene and attempt to pinpoint where the bridge failure began.

Hersman does not expect the investigation to delay removal of debris from the river or work on a temporary solution to replace or repair the I-5 span. State and federal officials can, and will, work together on the investigation, she said.

They'll be watching for safety issues that could affect other bridges.

"The results can be very catastrophic," Hersman said. "We're very fortunate in this situation."

Washington state officials said Saturday that it will take time to find both short- and long-term fixes for the bridge that collapsed on Interstate 5.

While, the National Transportation and Safety Board finishes its inspection, state workers will begin removing debris from the river. Next, a temporary solution will be put in place to return traffic to Washington state's most important north-south roadway.

Inspectors are working to find out whether the disintegration on Thursday of the heavily used span over the Skagit River, 60 miles north of Seattle and 40 miles south of the Canadian border, was a fluke or a sign of bigger problems.

"These things take time. We want to make sure it's done right, done thoroughly," Washington Transportation Department spokesman Bart Treece said.

A trucker was hauling a load of drilling equipment Thursday evening when his load bumped against the steel framework over the bridge. He looked in his rearview mirror and saw the span collapse into the water behind him.

Motorists should not expect to drive on I-5 between Mount Vernon and Burlington for many weeks and possibly months, Treece said.

Treece asked people to plan for an extra hour to make their way through detours around the collapsed bridge. There are three detour options northbound and two options southbound.

About 71,000 vehicles use that stretch of highway every day. Late Saturday morning, traffic was moving freely through the detours.

"We're expecting it to get worse as the day progresses," Treece said, noting that at 11 a.m., the cloudy skies and cool weather could be keeping Memorial Day weekend travelers at home.

State transportation officials began working on both a temporary solution and a permanent fix within hours of the bridge collapse, he said.

The goal is to get I-5 open as quickly as possible, while making sure the solution is as safe as possible, he added.

Officials were looking for a temporary, pre-fabricated bridge to replace the 160-foot section that failed, Gov. Jay Inslee said Friday. That option could be in place in weeks. Otherwise, it could be months before a replacement can be built, the governor said.

Inslee said it will cost $15 million to repair the bridge. The federal government has promised $1 million in emergency dollars and more money could come later, according to Washington's congressional delegation.

State officials approved Mullen Trucking in Alberta to carry a load as high as 15 feet, 9 inches, according to the permit released by the state. However, the southbound vertical clearance on the Skagit River bridge is as little as 14 feet, 5 inches, state records show. That lowest clearance is outside of the bridge's vehicle traveling lanes, Transportation Department communications director Lars Erickson said Friday. The bridge's curved overhead girders are higher in the center of the bridge but sweep lower toward a driver's right side.

The bridge has a maximum clearance of about 17 feet, but there is no signage to indicate how to safely navigate the bridge with a tall load.

At a news conference later Saturday, Hersman said Washington state does not require signage unless the clearance is 14 feet, 4 inches or less.

The permit specifically describes the route the truck would take, though it includes a qualification that the state "Does Not Guarantee Height Clearance."

A Suicide Prevention PSA Made A Brilliant Use Of Ad Pre-Roll ...

Publicis Brussels has created an ad for the Belgian suicide prevention line, Centre du Prevention de Suicide, that makes creative use of the pre-roll skip ad feature. The work aims to recruit good listeners for the prevention line.

Those who don't listen to the woman in the ad and hit "skip ad" are shown a scene that results in suicide. Those who don't click "skip ad" and listen to the woman's story get thanked by the woman and are shown the recruitment message.

t's an interesting approach both for the use of the "skip ad" feature and for its commentary on today's world where everyone is in a rush and doesn't care about the well being of others.

Of course, we can't really conclude that people who don't skip the ad will be good prevention line listeners or that people who do skip the ad won't be but we do like the analogy Publicis used.

The Simplest Flashlight Is Just a Rolled Up Piece of Paper

A flashlight is a crucial thing to have around the house, but even though it can be super useful, it's probably plastic and/or filled with DD batteries. Not exactly elegant. The Paper LED Torch Light on the other hand, is the picture of simplicity.

Designed by Kazuhiro Yamanaka, the Paper LED Torch Light is as simple as it seems. There's a single LED mounted on the inside, and when the paper is curved into a tube, two hidden switches turn it on. When the paper lies flat again, it goes off. It's not the first paper-light design we've ever seen, but it's definitely the most wonderfully simple.

As neat as it is, the Paper LED Torch Light doesn't seem to be on sale anywhere. But let's face facts; it probably wouldn't be a very good flashlight. Still, it's a pretty neat trick. And if you ever needed a flashlight that could hide, you'd be hard-pressed to find something better. [Designboom]
