Planning to pick up a smartphone or tablet this holiday season? Best Buy is trying to give you more reasons to go into its stores because it will be matching competitors' prices, even online ones like Amazon.?
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the price matching is just one feature Best Buy will be pushing this holiday season as we can also expect free home delivery on products that aren't in stock. This price-matching feature can be especially good for people buying mobile products, because Amazon routinely has great deals on brand new handsets.
Best Buy is trying to combat a phenomenon known as "showrooming:" Customers walk into a Best Buy store to check out a product, use an app like Amazon or eBay?to find a better price and then leave the store without buying anything from Best Buy. This is happening in a lot of retail stores that haven't been able to offer the same prices as their online competitors.?
I think this is a good short-term move for Best Buy, but I wonder what this will mean for it down the road. If I go in to buy a tablet in December and show them a cheaper price online, they'll match it, but what happens when I do the same next February? Won't this just expose more users to the cheaper prices online?
I think that many retailers can use mobile technology to their advantage. Apps like shopkick?reward users for walking into stores and things like Aisle411 make it super simple to find exactly what you're looking for. Stores may never have the cheapest prices, but these apps can deliver the best experience if the retailers take the right approach to mobile tech.?
